Hollywood legends are no strangers to behind-the-scenes drama, but few tales involve fists, chicken grease, and an unexpected duo. A new memoir has brought to light one of the most bizarre incidents: Sylvester Stallone’s on-set feud with Richard Gere, recounted directly by Stallone himself.

Before Stallone became famous for his role in ‘Rocky’ and Gere emerged as a romantic lead, both actors were young and relatively unknown, vying for roles in a low-budget comedy. That film, 1974’s ‘The Lords of Flatbush,’ was a modest production that had significant repercussions for both actors. The set quickly became a pressure cooker.

Stallone’s account is detailed in his memoir ‘The Steps,’ released on September 29. He describes how the tension with Gere began during auditions and escalated into a physical confrontation during filming. Stallone recalls threatening to knock Gere’s teeth out in front of the director, and later, he acted on that sentiment in a different way.

According to Stallone, the trouble started at the audition, where he also met Robert De Niro. Initially, things went smoothly with De Niro, but improvisations with Gere quickly turned sour. Stallone remembers Gere grabbing his T-shirt and digging his fingernails into his skin, prompting him to ask Gere to back off, only for it to happen again on the next take.

He then approached co-director Stephen Verona to ask if he could react as he would in real life if someone did that to him. When Verona inquired what that meant, Stallone replied that he would knock Gere’s teeth out. Although Verona urged him not to, the two actors did not end up fighting at that moment.

The breaking point reportedly came later during filming. Stallone claims the actors were on a lunch break in a parked car when Gere accidentally spilled chicken grease on his leg. Stallone reacted by elbowing Gere across the chest and pulling him out of the car.

Gere allegedly told Stallone he did not want to get physical, to which Stallone responded that it was too late. Verona intervened to break up the altercation, which ultimately resulted in Gere being fired from the film and replaced.

The animosity did not dissipate quickly. Stallone mentioned in a 2006 interview with Ain’t It Cool News that Gere still harbors serious dislike for him, claiming that Gere blames him for ongoing rumors. Reports from the memoir indicate that the two clashed again in 1994 at a charity event for Princess Diana in London, where they reportedly exchanged heated words, with Stallone stating it cost him a chance to meet her.

It’s important to note that this is Stallone’s perspective, drawn from his own book. Details of a fight from over 50 years ago are naturally filtered through memory and personal bias. Nevertheless, the story is filled with the colorful elements that make Hollywood feud tales so captivating.

Stallone is known for his intense filming environments, and this isn’t the only time tensions have surfaced. Dolph Lundgren, who portrayed Stallone’s nemesis in ‘Rocky IV,’ once revealed that the two nearly came to blows on the set of ‘The Expendables.’ Lundgren mentioned he told his wife he was ready to leave the film, but Stallone approached him with an apology, and the longtime friends managed to resolve their differences.

This contrast makes the Gere incident particularly memorable. While some of Stallone’s conflicts ended in reconciliation, this one seemingly solidified into a long-standing grudge. It also adds an unexpected layer to the early careers of two of Hollywood’s most prominent figures.

For fans of both actors, the memoir provides a rare glimpse into a time when neither was a star. ‘The Lords of Flatbush’ was released a couple of years before ‘Rocky,’ and long before ‘Pretty Woman’ established Gere as a household name. Their paths diverged significantly, but this chaotic shoot forever linked them.
