‘Crystal Lake’ New Images Showcase Horror as ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Approaches Release Date
The ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise has left a lasting mark on the horror genre, with its iconic hockey mask and eerie lakeside camp becoming synonymous with slasher films. However, the franchise has been relatively quiet, with the last official entry being the 2009 remake from Platinum Dunes.
That silence is about to be broken. A24 and Peacock are gearing up for a prequel series that delves into the origins of the legend, and the anticipation has been building steadily. The first teaser dropped in July, followed by a trailer, a premiere-episode screening at New York Comic Con, and a consistent release of new images.
Now, a new set of images from ‘Crystal Lake’ has surfaced just ahead of its October 15 premiere. One striking image features a woman with long dark hair sitting in a pink bathtub surrounded by blue tiles, her eyes gazing upward and her knees drawn up, with vivid red streaks smeared across the tub. Another image hints at a figure in an orange patterned top standing in a doorway. These visuals were part of an exclusive feature from Entertainment Weekly, which also included an interview with star Linda Cardellini and creator Brad Caleb Kane.

Set before the events of the original 1980 film, the series focuses on Pamela Voorhees, portrayed by Cardellini. A year after young Jason drowns in the lake, a series of unsettling events unfolds, prompting townspeople to question Pam’s true identity. As a couple of outsiders investigate her past, it becomes evident that she harbors dark secrets.
In the interview, Kane expressed his desire to deeply explore the relationship between Pamela and Jason, illustrating how a boy who felt out of place at camp transformed into a monster. Pamela is depicted as a mother who sacrificed her singing career to raise a child with special needs, only to be driven down a dark path by tragedy. Callum Vinson plays the role of young Jason.
For fans concerned that a streaming-era prequel might shy away from gore, there’s good news. The show’s effects team describes its level of gore as “level 10,” and reports suggest that the production is set to deliver an extraordinary amount of blood. Cardellini expressed her relief at seeing those intense scenes captured on camera, although she was equally glad when they wrapped up.
The blood-stained bathtub image hints at the chilling content to come, suggesting that the series will prioritize both atmosphere and unease alongside shock value.

In addition to Cardellini and Vinson, the series features regulars William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom. Catlett portrays a new character named Levon Brooks, while Scoggins takes on the role of Dorf, the police officer from the original film. Younger versions of familiar characters also make appearances, including Crazy Ralph, Claudette, and Barry, played by Nick Cordileone, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik.
Kane, who previously worked on ‘IT: Welcome to Derry,’ serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Original ‘Friday the 13th’ writer Victor Miller is also an executive producer, providing a direct connection to the franchise’s roots. Directors for the episodes include Michael Lennox, Celine Held, Logan George, and Quyen Tran.
Cardellini arrives fresh off her first Emmy win for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie, adding extra significance to a role that has already generated considerable buzz.
All eight hour-long episodes will be available simultaneously on Thursday, October 15, as a Peacock Original. In addition, Peacock is embracing the spooky season, with the original ‘Friday the 13th’ trilogy available on the platform since October 1, making it easy for fans to revisit the camp’s bloody history before returning to its origins.
With such a beloved franchise, expectations are high. The latest images indicate that Kane and his team understand why audiences have been drawn to Camp Crystal Lake for decades, and they are ready to embrace the horror.
