Film festival season transforms red carpets into showcases of style, and few stars embody this like Emma Stone. The two-time Oscar winner has established a reputation for polished, understated looks that allow the fabric and silhouette to shine. This approach was evident at this year’s New York Film Festival.

The 64th edition of the festival has been filled with premieres, and Wednesday night at Alice Tully Hall was dedicated to a project dear to Stone. The evening celebrated the New York debut of a new comedy from a filmmaker she has previously collaborated with, bringing together a star-studded cast and the creative team behind the scenes.

Stone graced the premiere of ‘The Debut’ on October 7, stepping onto the festival’s green carpet in a pale off-white Louis Vuitton midi dress. A photo of her look, credited to Theo Wargo/Getty, has been circulating online, showcasing Stone smiling with her auburn hair styled in soft waves against the Rolex and Film at Lincoln Center backdrop.

The dress is part of Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer collection, featuring a slip silhouette. Two delicate straps support a plunging bodice, while a layered cowl neckline in a soft gray provides a subtle contrast. The fluid fabric gracefully drapes her frame, culminating in a clean hemline.

Styled by her longtime collaborator Petra Flannery, Stone opted for minimal accessories. She paired the dress with off-white Aquazzura sandals featuring thin straps and carried a cream Louis Vuitton Wallet On A Chain bag. The only visible embellishments were rings on both hands, allowing the dress to take the spotlight.

Fashion outlets noted that the overall effect was reminiscent of effortless 1990s minimalism, reinforcing Stone’s status as one of Louis Vuitton’s most prominent global brand ambassadors. For fans of understated red carpet fashion, it serves as a perfect example.

Stone is not just an attendee at this premiere; she is also one of the producers of ‘The Debut’, alongside her husband, Dave McCary, and Ali Herting, through their Fruit Tree banner. The film is supported by Topic Studios and A24.

The team previously collaborated with writer-director Jesse Eisenberg on ‘A Real Pain’, and Stone attended the New York Film Festival screening of that film in 2024. This latest premiere feels like a continuation of their creative partnership. Eisenberg wrote and directed ‘The Debut’ and also composed the original songs.

The film follows Mona Friedman, portrayed by Julianne Moore, a shy housewife unexpectedly cast in a community theater production of an original musical. Under the influence of a domineering director played by Paul Giamatti, she begins to lose herself in the role and the intense world surrounding the production. The trailer introduces Giamatti’s character as the biggest name in New Jersey community theater.

The cast also features Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, Bernadette Peters, Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, and Eldar Isgandarov, with Eisenberg making an on-screen appearance. This marks Eisenberg’s third film as a director, following ‘When You Finish Saving the World’ and ‘A Real Pain’. Moore and Eisenberg previously collaborated on the first of those films.

A24 has scheduled a limited theatrical release for December 11, followed by a wide release on Christmas Day. The film is also set to close the 70th BFI London Film Festival, providing it with a prestigious send-off on the festival circuit. This rollout mirrors the strategy used for several of the studio’s major awards contenders.

For Stone, the evening served as a reminder of her multifaceted roles. She’s an actress, a producer, and a style icon, often all in the same week. The premiere of ‘The Debut’ highlights her commitment to championing the work of other artists as much as her own on-screen performances.

In a season filled with dramatic gowns and bold statement pieces, Stone’s choice stood out precisely because of its simplicity. A pale slip dress, minimal accessories, and a warm smile were all the look required. It’s the kind of quiet confidence that her fans have come to expect.
