Worker’s Doctor’s Appointment Request Has ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Fans Laughing
Every major movie release brings about its own unique culture. Fans rush to book the earliest showings, organize group outings, and sometimes even devise clever ways to navigate their work schedules. The excitement surrounding Marvel’s upcoming Avengers event has now spilled over into the workplace.
Though ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ is still a couple of months away, the anticipation has been building steadily. Record-breaking presales, the unveiling of a Doctor Doom popcorn bucket, and fan accounts turning the film’s countdown into a daily meme have all contributed to the buzz. It was only a matter of time before something truly relatable emerged.
That moment came this week with a text exchange shared by Complex on October 8. The post features an employee requesting a day off for a “doctor’s appointment” to attend ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Credited to the X account Buy Physical Media, the post quickly garnered over 147,000 views, around 3,000 likes, and 177 reposts.

The screenshot reveals a brief conversation. The employee starts with a polite, “I got a question?” The boss responds with, “What’s up?” and the employee then asks for December 18 off. Another image in the thread, which is partially cut off, seems to show the explanation for the doctor’s appointment.
The original poster, who manages the Buy Physical Media account, shared the exchange on October 5, humorously noting that an employee had just requested to take ‘Doomsday’ off. The punchline hits hard because the date mentioned is the movie’s release day, presenting a very Marvel-esque version of calling in sick.
Responses to the original post embraced the humor. One user quipped that the employee had chosen the one boss who actually knows the release date. This sentiment resonates with anyone who has ever tried to keep a fandom plan under wraps, capturing the awkwardness of the situation.
The account behind the post has previously been involved in the Marvel conversation. It was the same account that shared a first look at the Doctor Doom popcorn bucket on September 27 and went viral earlier this month with a popcorn-related post that reached millions of views.
The film is set to release on December 18, and it promises to be an event in the classic Avengers tradition. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who also helmed ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the film sees Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, Florence Pugh, Anthony Mackie, Vanessa Kirby, Letitia Wright, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen.
The storyline brings together the Avengers, the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, and the X-Men against Doom. This marks the first Avengers movie since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in 2019, which explains the heightened eagerness among fans. After years of multiverse setup, they are clearly ready for a payoff.
The ticket sales reflect this excitement. When presales opened on July 20 for approximately 1,000 premium large-format theaters, the film reportedly sold $16.5 million in tickets within the first 24 hours. This figure was double the opening-day sales of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, according to Variety.

By August 20, advance sales had reportedly surpassed $35 million, a figure described as unprecedented this far ahead of a release. Disney later announced that the total had reached $50 million, with around 70% of tickets sold for premium-format screenings. In Australia, the film also generated over $1 million in presales within its first 24 hours, marking the biggest opening day of ticket presales for any film there this year.
For context, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ remains Marvel’s biggest benchmark, opening to $357.1 million domestically and finishing with nearly $2.8 billion worldwide. ‘Doomsday’ faces stiff competition, opening on the same day as Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’, which has reportedly secured IMAX screens for its first three weeks. In response, Disney has created its own Infinity Vision premium format.
Fans planning to take a day off may also be curious about the film’s runtime. The Hollywood Reporter reported an official runtime of 165 minutes back in July, though the Russo brothers have since hinted that the final cut may be shorter. This could make a half-day request less feasible, which might explain why the employee in the viral text opted for the whole day off.
Of course, the post is meant to be humorous, and no one is suggesting readers should attempt the same tactic. Still, the message encapsulates the kind of excitement that studios dream of. When a movie ticket feels like a valid reason to bend workplace rules, the marketing has undoubtedly succeeded.
