‘Heart of the Beast’ Star Brad Pitt’s Request for Angelina Jolie’s Financial Records Denied
The legal battle between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie continues to captivate Hollywood watchers. What started as a custody and divorce dispute has evolved into a complex conflict over a French wine estate, with each ruling generating new headlines.
The latest development revolves around Château Miraval, a luxury estate in the south of France that once symbolized the couple’s happiest moments. Purchased in 2008, the estate became famous for its wine, particularly its rosé, and served as the venue for their wedding in 2014.
Following their separation in 2016, the ownership of the winery has been a significant point of contention. Recently, a judge rejected Pitt’s request for access to Jolie’s private financial records, with her lawyer accusing him of harassment and attempts to exert control over her.
According to TMZ, the ruling was issued on Tuesday, October 6. The court denied Pitt’s request for Jolie’s financial records from 2017 to 2019, which he sought as part of the Miraval case. Pitt’s team argued that these records could provide insight into her decision to sell her stake in the estate.
This decision is not necessarily final. The judge indicated that Pitt could renew his request if Jolie’s testimony brings her income from those years into question. For now, however, the actress has secured a win in this round.
Jolie’s attorney, Paul Murphy, sharply criticized Pitt’s motion in comments to TMZ. He stated that the request was unwarranted and crossed a line, characterizing it as another attempt by Pitt to control her and the narrative surrounding the case.
Murphy emphasized that Jolie has been striving to separate her personal and financial matters from her ex-husband. He also claimed that Pitt attempted to use her exit from Miraval as leverage to compel her to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Pitt has denied allegations of abuse made by Jolie, and both parties remain steadfast in their positions.
The request was linked to a specific argument. Pitt’s team contended that Jolie raised her financial situation when she mentioned needing “financial independence” to sell her share of the winery. Jolie’s lawyers countered in an earlier filing, asserting that she sought independence from Pitt, not claiming general financial hardship.
They argued that requesting records from before 2020 was an unnecessary invasion of her privacy. According to that filing, Jolie refused to sign an NDA proposed by Pitt as a condition for him buying her share and opted instead to sell her stake to another party. Essentially, the dispute centers on severing financial ties, not a lack of funds.
In October 2021, Jolie sold her half of the estate to Tenute del Mondo, a division of the Stoli Group. Pitt subsequently sued her in February 2022, claiming they had an agreement that neither would sell their interest without the other’s consent. Jolie countersued, alleging that Pitt has waged a vindictive campaign against her since she filed for divorce in 2016.
The case has seen numerous rulings since then. In June, a California court mandated Stoli Group representatives, including executive Alexey Oliynik, to testify, and an appeals court ruled that Stoli owner Yuri Shefler could not evade being named in the lawsuit. Pitt also secured a discovery ruling in December 2025, when Judge Lia Martin ordered Jolie to produce 22 disputed documents related to the sale.
Jolie’s team has consistently maintained that such rulings do not impact the core of the case. A source close to the actress indicated that she chose Stoli because she believed the company could help grow the business for the benefit of their children. Meanwhile, Pitt’s side insists that the sale breached a prior understanding between the ex-couple.
The court calendar is filling up, with mediation scheduled for October 28 and a trial date set for February 1, 2027. In the meantime, more motions, filings, and likely additional rulings can be expected.
While this latest ruling is a minor victory for Jolie, it is far from the conclusion of the saga. Pitt retains the option to revisit the issue, and the broader questions surrounding the sale remain unresolved. As the dispute over the winery nears its tenth year, it continues to reflect the complexities of the former couple’s intertwined history.
