Few video games have experienced a comeback quite like ‘Cyberpunk 2077’. Initially launched in December 2020 amidst a wave of technical issues, especially on older consoles, it quickly became a cautionary tale. However, after years of patches, updates, and the success of an unexpected anime, the game has transformed significantly.

This redemption arc is a key reason why the franchise has caught Hollywood’s attention. The game has sold over 40 million copies globally, with its ‘Phantom Liberty’ expansion selling more than 15 million, as reported by Deadline. Few properties can claim such a vast audience before a single frame of live action has been filmed.

Now, the neon-lit world of Night City is officially making its way to theaters. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ universe, with ‘Transformers’ producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura on board to produce alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio behind the game. According to reports, this will not be a remake of the game’s narrative but rather a new story within the same universe.

Di Bonaventura is well-known for his work on the live-action ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’ films, with additional credits including ‘Snake Eyes’, ‘Madame Web’, and ‘Transformers One’. The involvement of CD Projekt Red as a co-producer indicates that the developer aims to maintain close oversight of how its world is portrayed, similar to their role in ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’, which they co-produced.

At this stage, no director, writer, or cast has been announced. The project seems to be in its early stages, possibly even before pre-production, meaning it may take some time before more concrete details are revealed. Nevertheless, fans are already speculating whether Keanu Reeves, who portrayed Johnny Silverhand in the game, might reprise his role in some capacity.

This isn’t the first time a live-action ‘Cyberpunk’ project has been unveiled. In October 2023, CD Projekt Red announced a partnership with Anonymous Content, the company behind ‘True Detective’ and ‘Mr. Robot’, to develop a live-action project. At that time, it was still in its early stages, actively searching for a screenwriter to craft a brand-new story.

It’s unclear if the new Paramount film is the same project being developed with Anonymous Content. For now, these two announcements exist as separate pieces of news, and fans are eager for clarification as more information becomes available.

The franchise has gained momentum for good reason. ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’, the Netflix anime released in 2022, received widespread acclaim and attracted a wave of new players back to the game, pushing sales past 20 million at that time. A second season of ‘Edgerunners’ is set to premiere on Netflix on October 20.

The game is based on Mike Pondsmith’s tabletop role-playing game ‘Cyberpunk’, and its narrative follows V and the rogue digital ghost of Johnny Silverhand as they attempt to dismantle the Arasaka Corporation. CD Projekt Red is also working on the next installment in the series, currently under the working title ‘Project Orion’. With so much in motion, a feature film fits seamlessly into the company’s plans.

The studio is clearly investing in gaming properties. Paramount is co-producing the ‘Street Fighter’ movie with Legendary, which is set to hit theaters on October 16, and is also developing a ‘Call of Duty’ film with Peter Berg directing and co-writing alongside Taylor Sheridan. Additionally, it has enjoyed success with the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ films over the years.

This track record helps explain the interest in Night City. Video game adaptations have become increasingly competitive, and audiences have shown a willingness to embrace stories that expand a game’s universe rather than simply retelling it. By setting the film in the same universe instead of remaking the game, this approach aligns with that trend.

Many questions remain unanswered. Will the film introduce a new character, or will it feature familiar faces from the game? What tone will it adopt, considering ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ blends gritty violence, dark humor, and unexpected emotional depth? And how will the narrative fit alongside the anime, the upcoming game, and any other adaptations?

For now, this news represents a promising first step. Night City is one of gaming’s most vibrant settings, filled with towering megacorporations, street gangs, and body-modifying technology. If Paramount executes it well, it could result in a stunning visual experience.
