Every October, London transforms its largest screens into a showcase for the year’s most anticipated films, and the BFI London Film Festival consistently attracts star power. This year marks the festival’s 70th anniversary, featuring 251 films, shorts, series, and immersive works from 88 countries over 12 days. Among the impressive lineup, one Spanish epic has been particularly captivating audiences.

That film is ‘La Bola Negra’, an ambitious drama directed by the duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis. It was featured as one of the festival’s Galas at the Royal Festival Hall, a prestigious slot reserved for the event’s most significant titles. The film has been generating buzz since its premiere at Cannes, making its London appearance feel like a celebratory victory lap.

The highlight of the evening came when Penélope Cruz graced the ‘La Bola Negra’ screening, taking time to meet fans and sign autographs while sporting a sleek tailored black outfit topped with a black beret. Reports indicate her ensemble was a black-and-white Ralph Lauren outfit, perfectly complementing the film’s moody and romantic atmosphere.

The premiere took place on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Royal Festival Hall. Cruz was accompanied by cast members Guitarricadelafuente and Miguel Bernardeau, along with co-directors Calvo and Ambrossi. Guitarricadelafuente, a Spanish singer, makes his acting debut in the film as Sebastián.

Cruz portrays Nené Romero, while Glenn Close plays Isabelle. The ensemble cast also includes Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, and Julio Torres. This blend of established stars and newcomers adds a unique energy to the film.

The narrative spans three generations of men in Spain across three distinct periods: 1932, 1937, and 2017. In the first timeline, Carlos seeks belonging in a divided nation, while in the second, a soldier named Sebastián finds connection amidst conflict. In the modern era, Alberto uncovers a long-buried family secret.

The film draws inspiration from the works of Federico García Lorca, whose life and writings influence the story, even though he is not the central character. The title is derived from one of his final unfinished works. Calvo, Ambrossi, and Alberto Conejero co-wrote the screenplay, adapting Conejero’s play along with other Lorca texts, resulting in a queer epic that explores themes of desire, repression, and memory.

The film’s journey to London has been remarkable. It premiered in competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, where it received a prolonged standing ovation and a Palme d’Or nomination. Calvo and Ambrossi were awarded the festival’s Best Director honor, sharing it with Paweł Pawlikowski.

Critics have lauded its ambition, emotional depth, and historical breadth, with many reviewers highlighting Cruz’s performance. However, not all feedback has been positive, as some critiques pointed to excessive melodrama and uneven pacing, with one outlet labeling it as overblown. At 2 hours and 35 minutes, it is a bold endeavor, and the mixed reactions contribute to the ongoing discourse.

Spain has also submitted the film as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, adding momentum to its awards-season campaign. For Cruz, the London appearance marks another significant moment in the film’s journey.

The film is set to open in select theaters in New York City and Los Angeles on Oct. 16, followed by its arrival on Netflix on Dec. 2 in the U.S. and Canada. In Spain, it premiered in theaters on Sept. 25.

Additionally, the film is touring as part of the festival’s broader program, with extra screenings at various venues across the UK. Some tickets for these venues have already sold out, indicating a strong interest from audiences eager to discover what the excitement is about.

Whether you are drawn in by the historical context, the poetic influence of Lorca, or the star-studded cast, ‘La Bola Negra’ promises to be one of the year’s most discussed arthouse releases. With Cruz captivating fans on the red carpet, the film has already claimed the evening.
