Few animated franchises inspire the kind of loyalty that ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ does. Its world of benders, spirits, and sprawling adventures has remained a topic of conversation for years, and new stories come with high expectations. This is why the launch of ‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ has been closely monitored by longtime fans.

The series debuted this week as the next chapter in the franchise, introducing a new Avatar to a world already shaped by ‘The Legend of Korra’. Now, just hours after its premiere, the show’s future has been secured in a significant way.

Paramount+ has renewed ‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ for two additional seasons, bringing it to Seasons 3 and 4, which the creators refer to as Books 3 and 4. This announcement coincided with the release of the first three episodes of Season 1 on Paramount+. A premiere date for Season 2 has not yet been revealed.

Co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko shared the renewal news at New York Comic Con. More details regarding the upcoming books will be disclosed at a later date. This decision provides the series with a long runway even before it wraps up its initial run.

The same panel also unveiled a brand-new series, ‘Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos’, which is described as the next installment in the franchise. It follows a rebellious teenage Avatar who learns the four elements while navigating challenges from his angry teacher, pirates, and spirits. Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studio are behind its production, with Konietzko serving as showrunner.

Attendees at the panel got a first look at Kuruk and his pet, Nikik. The story is set generations before Aang, offering a glimpse into a very different era of the world. No premiere date has been announced yet.

‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ is an original 2D-animated series from Nickelodeon and Avatar Studios. It centers on Pavi, a young Earthbender who discovers she is the new Avatar after Korra, in a world ravaged by a cataclysm. Rather than being seen as a savior, she is perceived as a threat to humanity and pursued by both human and spirit enemies.

Pavi and her long-lost twin sister, Nisha, must uncover their origins and save the Seven Havens, the last bastions of civilization, before they fall. The setting takes place after ‘The Legend of Korra’, where portals now connect the human and spirit worlds. Korra has also lost her connection to past Avatars.

Saheli Khan voices Pavi, while Aishu Devan voices Nisha. The cast also features Akshay Khanna as Karthik, Major Curda as Jae, Sakina Jaffrey as Agam, Darren Barnet as Daemin, and Dianne Doan as Zi. Dee Bradley Baker lends his voice to the companion characters Geet and Ruhi.

DiMartino and Konietzko are co-creators and executive producers. Ethan Spaulding, who served as an animation director on ‘The Last Airbender’, is an executive producer and writer, with Sehaj Sethi as a co-executive producer. Janet Varney, the original voice of Korra, moderated the New York Comic Con panel.

The series consists of 26 half-hour episodes divided into two books of 13 episodes each. Book 1 is being released in weekly batches. Episodes 1 to 3 premiered on Oct. 9, episodes 4 to 6 will arrive on Oct. 16, episodes 7 to 9 will be available on Oct. 23, and the final four episodes will drop on Oct. 30.

A companion podcast, ‘Braving the Elements’, will release two episodes weekly alongside the show. The panel also showcased colorways for ‘Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game’ based on ‘Seven Havens’ characters, along with a temple stage. These extras highlight the studio’s commitment to this new era.

Early critical reactions have been positive. The Hollywood Reporter noted that it feels great to return to this world, while TheWrap described the first six episodes as engrossing, rich, and entertaining. Such feedback likely bolstered Paramount+’s confidence to quickly commit to more books.

For fans, the combination of a renewal and a new Avatar spinoff signals that the franchise is far from over. With multiple series in development, the world of benders is expanding in several exciting directions.
