The ‘Stargate’ franchise has faced a long wait for revival, and the journey toward a new series from Jac Schaeffer has been anything but straightforward. Originating with a 1994 film featuring James Spader and Kurt Russell, the franchise expanded into a vast television universe that fans have eagerly wanted to see return.

This universe includes ‘Stargate SG-1,’ which aired for 10 seasons with stars like Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. Following that, ‘Stargate Atlantis’ aired for 5 seasons from 2004 to 2008, and ‘Stargate Universe’ concluded in 2011. The latest addition was the 2018 web series ‘Stargate Origins.’

Now, there is renewed momentum, led by a significant name. According to an exclusive report from Variety, ‘WandaVision’ creator Jac Schaeffer is developing a new ‘Stargate’ TV series for Amazon MGM Studios. This marks Amazon’s second attempt to revive the franchise after a previous version failed to progress.

Following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM for $8.5 billion in 2022, ‘Stargate’ was one of the first properties earmarked for adaptation into a series or film. In November 2025, the studio ordered a series from Martin Gero, a writer with roots in the original franchise. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who have been key creative figures in the ‘Stargate’ universe, were set to serve as consulting producers.

Gero’s connection to the franchise is deeply personal. As Variety noted when the series was announced, he stated, “‘Stargate’ taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA.”

Unfortunately, that enthusiasm wasn’t enough to see the project through. Reports indicate that the show had completed a 20-week writers room and was in pre-production in the UK when Amazon decided to halt the project in June. Concerns were raised that Gero’s vision might not appeal broadly beyond the existing fanbase, focusing too heavily on catering to die-hard fans instead of attracting new viewers.

Gero is not entirely out of the picture, as he remains under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Additionally, Amazon is exploring other avenues to keep the franchise alive, which now seems more likely than ever.

Schaeffer, known for creating ‘WandaVision’ in 2021, which continued Scarlet Witch’s narrative while paying homage to American sitcoms, has signed a 3-year deal with Amazon MGM Studios. This deal allows her to develop, write, executive produce, and direct original series for Prime Video, following her previous work with Marvel Studios and 20th Television. Notably, she is not involved in ‘VisionQuest,’ the upcoming continuation of the stories from ‘WandaVision.’

Her experience is significant. A creator who has successfully reimagined a familiar universe in an innovative way could be just what a franchise with 30 years of lore needs. The challenge will be whether this approach can create a welcoming entry point for new audiences, something Amazon is clearly prioritizing.

Currently, details remain scarce. There’s no information on a title, cast, or how closely Schaeffer’s version will adhere to the established mythology. Amazon has not revealed much beyond her involvement. Given the previous attempt’s outcome, balancing respect for longtime fans with the need to attract new viewers will likely be crucial.

Interest in the franchise is evident. A 2016 Digital Spy user poll ranked ‘Stargate SG-1’ as the 4th best sci-fi series of all time, following ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘Babylon 5,’ and ‘Firefly.’ Such enduring affection is precisely why every revival effort faces intense scrutiny.

If Schaeffer’s project successfully makes it through the gate, it will have significant expectations and a wealth of goodwill to build upon. After the last attempt fell apart, patience may be the best approach for fans as they watch this new development unfold.
