‘Coven Academy’ Casts a Spell on Gen Alpha With Streaming Success
Every generation seems to have its own wave of witches, and the latest one is crafted with the youngest viewers in mind. ‘Coven Academy’ is marketed as a fast-paced fantasy for Gen Alpha, with creator Tim Federle describing it as a mix of ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Wednesday,’ and ‘Charmed.’
The journey to the screen began on March 11, 2025, when Disney Branded Television ordered a pilot, and the series was officially greenlit that August. Federle, who also created ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,’ developed it under his overall deal with Disney. Initially intended for Disney Channel, the show eventually found its home on Freeform, with production taking place in Vancouver from December 5, 2025, to March 5, 2026.
Now, the viewership numbers are in, confirming the show’s appeal. TheWrap reports that the show amassed 11.4 million global hours viewed for its first chapter in its opening week, according to internal Disney figures. However, the breakdown by platform was not disclosed.
The series premiered on Freeform on October 1, with the complete season available the following day on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform on demand. Nielsen data cited in the report ranked it as the No. 1 streaming series among teens aged 12 to 17 during its premiere weekend, and it also placed in the top 5 among all viewers.
The first chapter was also shared on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube on October 2, coinciding with the Disney+ premiere. This strategy generated over 30 million additional views, including 18 million on TikTok, 11 million on Instagram, and 2.4 million on YouTube.
These figures are significant as Gen Alpha viewers are known to be TikTok-oriented, making short-form clips an effective entry point into the show. This approach smartly engages an audience where they already spend their time.
Season 1 consists of 21 chapters, each running 10 to 15 minutes long, shorter than Disney’s typical 21-minute episodes but longer than microdramas. Federle filmed 10 episodes and then divided them into chapters, strategically placing cliffhangers to maintain a propulsive story.
Set in New Orleans, the show follows three teenage witches and their warlock peers as they navigate deadly secrets, dangerous powers, and forbidden love. The young cast includes Malina Weissman, Malachi Barton, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, and Louis Thresher, with Tiffani Thiessen and Devon Sawa portraying adult roles.
Federle noted a gap for classic WB and CW-style genre storytelling, as much of the YA competition tends to focus on grounded love triangles. “Every generation deserves their own witch show,” he stated in an interview with TheWrap. He also emphasized that the series is a family-friendly option that avoids being overly dark or gory, after testing it with tweens, 15- to 17-year-olds, and Gen X viewers.

Beyond Disney’s own metrics, the series has garnered strong word of mouth. As of October 4, it held a 100% Fresh rating from critics and an 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it was reported as the most-viewed title on Disney+ during its launch.
Public chart data supports this narrative, though these figures are estimates rather than official viewing hours. According to FlixPatrol, it ranked No. 1 on Disney+’s U.S. series chart, surpassing ‘American Horror Story’ and ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga,’ and placed third on the overall Disney+ chart on October 5, trailing only ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘Hocus Pocus.’

While Disney has yet to announce a second season, the creative team is clearly looking ahead. Federle has suggested ideas that include following Jake and Briar, Ollie’s return, and Sasha’s storyline with her vampire brother, expressing a preference for adding new episodes with the existing cast rather than introducing many new characters.
Weissman, for her part, has stated she is torn between the love interests Jake and Ollie, which is the kind of discussion that keeps fans engaged. If the early momentum continues, a renewal would not be surprising.
