Scarlett Johansson is known for her striking red carpet looks, and red continues to be her color of choice. At the London premiere of ‘Transformers One’ in 2024, she donned a rust-red gown that perfectly complemented her makeup. Few stars can make a single hue feel so intentional.

This year, London provided another opportunity for her signature style. The 70th BFI London Film Festival, which kicked off on October 7, has featured numerous big names, with Johansson among the stars expected to grace the carpet alongside Robert Pattinson, Adam Driver, Jenna Ortega, Sebastian Stan, and Cynthia Erivo. The festival also highlights animation, with Travis Knight’s ‘Wildwood’ and Brad Bird’s ‘Ray Gunn’ making their debuts.

On Saturday, October 10, Johansson made a stunning appearance at the world premiere of ‘Ray Gunn’. She wore a vibrant red strapless satin dress featuring a gathered, structured bodice and a full skirt that fell just past her knees. The dress included pockets, and she posed effortlessly with her hands tucked inside.

Her styling was kept minimal to allow the dress to shine. Her blonde hair cascaded in soft, tousled waves at shoulder length, and she accessorized with only a delicate gold pendant necklace. Brad Bird and co-star Sam Rockwell were also seen alongside her at the event.

The premiere marks a significant moment for the project. ‘Ray Gunn’ is an animated neo-noir science fiction mystery directed by Bird, who co-wrote it with Matthew Robbins. The film has a runtime of 119 minutes and is confirmed as one of the festival’s world premieres.

Johansson voices Venus Nova, a famous multimedia star whose life becomes intertwined with an investigation. Sam Rockwell lends his voice to private investigator Raymond Gunn, described as the last human private detective. The narrative unfolds in an alternate 1939 where humans coexist with aliens.

Bird has shared that the concept for ‘Ray Gunn’ has been in his mind for over 30 years. He and Robbins developed the original script in the mid-1990s, but the film only gained traction when Skydance Animation got involved around 2022. This marks Bird’s first film in eight years.

The lengthy development process had its consequences. Bird stepped away from directing ‘Incredibles 3’, which will now be helmed by Peter Sohn. Bird is a two-time Oscar winner for ‘The Incredibles’ and ‘Ratatouille’, and this is his first animated feature outside of Pixar since ‘The Iron Giant’ in 1999.

Johansson and Rockwell lead a talented voice cast. Tom Waits voices a character named Eyera, and the ensemble also includes Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Rodriguez, Matt Jones, Aasif Mandvi, Alan Tudyk, and Kathryn Hunter. John Ratzenberger, a longtime collaborator of Bird, is also part of the project.

The score is composed by Michael Giacchino. The film is produced by John Lasseter, Bird, Lisa Beroud, David Ellison, and Dana Goldberg.

The festival audience is getting an exclusive early look. A second screening is scheduled for the BFI IMAX on October 17, coinciding with the film’s animation centerpiece at the Montclair Film Festival. ‘Ray Gunn’ will hit select theaters on December 4, followed by its streaming release on December 18.

That streaming date is particularly busy, as it also marks the release of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’, making December 18 one of the most competitive days in the movie calendar. A premiere this stylish, featuring a star so camera-ready, is a fantastic way to generate buzz.

The red satin dress aligns perfectly with the film’s retro-noir aesthetic. Its sleek lines and bold color pay homage to classic Hollywood without feeling like a costume. It also keeps the focus on Johansson, who at 41 shows no signs of slowing down.

With the stunning dress and the growing excitement around the film, the evening was a promising kickoff for ‘Ray Gunn’. Fans will soon discover if the movie lives up to its long-awaited anticipation.
