Chuck Lorre Shares Charlie Sheen’s Troubling State During His Last ‘Two and a Half Men’ Scene
Charlie Sheen’s exit from ‘Two and a Half Men’ remains one of the most chaotic and public departures in sitcom history. Over a decade later, the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, is shedding light on the tumultuous ending of Sheen’s time on set.
In his forthcoming memoir ‘Sitcom’, Lorre revisits this challenging period, and an excerpt has reignited interest in Sheen’s final days on the show.
Vanity Fair published a portion of the book on Friday, October 9, ahead of its release on October 13. In the excerpt, Lorre, now 73, recounts how Sheen’s behavior began to deteriorate.
Sheen portrayed Charlie Harper for eight seasons, from 2004 to 2011. Lorre notes that while the show was enjoyable to produce, it took a turn when Sheen frequently started calling in sick.
Lorre recalls that the last scene he filmed with Sheen was alongside Melanie Lynskey, who played Charlie’s neighbor Rose. He describes how Sheen struggled to remember his lines and had to cling to furniture for support.
According to Lorre, Lynskey was understandably frightened. It was evident to everyone involved that a beloved cast member was in distress, prompting Lorre to make the difficult decision to halt production.
This account is solely Lorre’s perspective, and it’s important to mention that both The Daily Beast and Entertainment Weekly reached out to representatives for Sheen and Lynskey for comments. Lynskey previously stated in 2018 that Sheen had always treated her kindly.
The excerpt paints a picture of a set filled with uncertainty. Lorre describes an environment where the cast and crew operated under constant anxiety.
He mentions that the reasons for Sheen’s absences kept accumulating, including claims of food poisoning, emergency dental visits, and an incident where Sheen allegedly missed rehearsal due to an exploding lighter that burned off his eyelashes.
Following that final scene, Lorre informed Sheen that the show would film two more episodes before taking a much-needed three-month break for Sheen to seek help. Sheen reportedly insisted, in anger, on filming four additional episodes.
Lorre speculates that Sheen may have been motivated by financial concerns. After CBS executives encouraged him to seek rehab, Sheen did enter treatment, but it did not go as intended, according to his own memoir.
In February 2011, CBS suspended production for the remainder of the season after Sheen entered rehab and made derogatory remarks about Lorre. His contract was terminated the following month, leading to Ashton Kutcher stepping in as his replacement.
Sheen has provided a different rationale for his behavior during that time. In his 2025 memoir ‘The Book of Sheen’, he claimed that a testosterone cream he was using transformed him into a volatile person toward the end of his tenure on the show.
Lorre, however, asserts that Sheen spent his time off indulging rather than seeking recovery. The two narratives diverge significantly, and neither has been independently verified.

The excerpt concludes on a more positive note. Lorre recounts a chance encounter with Sheen years later, where Sheen was gracious and appreciative, and they chose not to revisit the ‘Two and a Half Men’ ordeal.
Their reconciliation has also been evident on screen. Sheen was reported to have joined Lorre’s Max comedy ‘Bookie’, marking their first collaboration since their fallout. Lynskey, who has enjoyed success in series like ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Yellowjackets’, has expressed her openness to a reunion.
The series aired for 12 seasons on CBS, from 2003 to 2015, with the Sheen era being its most discussed phase. Fans have long been curious about the behind-the-scenes events as Sheen’s struggles became public knowledge.
Lorre’s account adds another layer to that narrative, highlighting a moment that, in his view, made the decision to end the show unavoidable. It serves as a reminder that behind the humor of a successful sitcom, real people were facing significant challenges.
With ‘Sitcom’ set to release on October 13, more behind-the-scenes revelations are likely to emerge.
