‘Children of Blood and Bone’ Reportedly Has One of the Largest Budgets of the Decade
Fantasy epics have always required substantial investments. Crafting an entire world filled with magic and hoping that audiences will embrace it into a franchise demands significant financial backing and even greater belief. Now, ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ emerges as the latest film to test the limits of studio commitment.
Reports indicate that Paramount’s adaptation boasts a staggering production budget of $200 million, excluding marketing expenses. This figure positions it among the most expensive films of the decade. The movie is set to hit theaters, Dolby Cinema, Premium Large Format, and IMAX on January 15, 2027, showcasing the studio’s confidence in its financial gamble.
This budget has garnered considerable attention, especially since the project represents a significant milestone for representation in the fantasy genre. Based on Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel, the film is an Afrofantasy featuring a predominantly Black cast, arriving with fans eager for it to be treated as a major blockbuster. Such a budget implies that Paramount is indeed ready to deliver on that expectation.

Filming took place in IMAX, with principal photography commencing in Lagos in February 2025 and concluding on June 2, 2025. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film features cinematography by Polly Morgan and a score by Terence Blanchard. The runtime is set at 146 minutes.
Prince-Bythewood co-wrote the screenplay with Adeyemi, who also serves as an executive producer. The production team includes Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, Karen Rosenfelt, and Matt Jackson, with Temple Hill Entertainment, Sunswept Entertainment, and Jackson Pictures backing the project. Paramount secured the rights for an exclusive theatrical release.
The cast is extensive and talented. Thuso Mbedu stars as Zélie, joined by Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, and Tosin Cole. Chiwetel Ejiofor portrays King Saran, while Regina King takes on the role of Queen Nehanda, with Idris Elba and Viola Davis also featured in the film.
Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, and Richard Mofe-Damijo are part of the ensemble, alongside Saniyya Sidney, Diaana Babnicova, Bukky Bakray, Ayra Starr, and Shamz Garuba. This impressive lineup contributes to the perception that the studio is treating the film as a significant tentpole, helping to explain the escalating costs.
Set in the magical kingdom of Orïsha, the film follows a young woman on a quest to reclaim magic that was violently taken from her people. She and her brother ally with the king’s daughter and son to rise against his oppressive regime. It’s a narrative about power, loss, and resistance, all wrapped in a grand fantasy backdrop.
The first trailer premiered at CinemaCon, receiving a positive response, and the film later featured at a New York Comic Con panel with its cast. These events have positioned it as one of the major releases of early 2027, with some fans calling it a long-awaited moment for Afrofantasy.

Reactions to the film have been fervent. Some fans have urged the studio to remain true to the story, while others emphasize that the budget should reflect the vision. Additionally, discussions surrounding colorism and casting choices have been prevalent since the project’s early stages.
Behind the scenes, the film has also faced scrutiny regarding tensions involving the author. Adeyemi has encouraged fans to support the books through independent bookstores instead of expecting her to promote the film, adding another layer to the ongoing conversation about the adaptation.
With such a substantial budget, the pressure for box office success is immense. According to industry standards, a film typically needs to earn around 2 to 2.5 times its budget to break even, placing the target for this film between $400 million and $500 million globally. This is a high bar for an original fantasy franchise launching in January, a month not typically associated with major hits.
Conversely, the film benefits from a built-in audience from the book trilogy, a premium format release, and a cast with international appeal. If it resonates with viewers, it could pave the way for a franchise centered around Orïsha, which is clearly what Paramount aims for. Whether audiences will embrace it remains to be seen.
As the release date approaches, expect increased marketing, additional footage, and ongoing discussions about whether the budget is a bold investment or a risky gamble. Reviews will play a crucial role, as a film with such high ambitions requires strong word-of-mouth to succeed. For fans, the reported budget primarily signals that the studio is taking the narrative seriously.
