Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Share Set Photos from New ‘The Mummy’ Film
Few adventure franchises evoke as much nostalgia as ‘The Mummy’, and few have faced as many challenges in recapturing that original magic. After years of delays and false starts, the highly anticipated fourth film is finally in production, and fans have eagerly awaited the moment when its two iconic leads would reunite.
That wait has been quite lengthy. The original film debuted in 1999, followed by ‘The Mummy Returns’ in 2001. However, Rachel Weisz did not return for 2008’s ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’, with Maria Bello stepping in for the role of Evelyn. A 2017 reboot featuring Tom Cruise was met with critical and commercial disappointment.
Now, the first images of Weisz and Brendan Fraser together on set have emerged. In these photos, Weisz is seen in a striking deep red skirt suit with a belted jacket, while Fraser dons a brown jacket over a plaid shirt and jeans. The two share a warm, smiling moment, marking the first time fans have seen Rick and Evelyn O’Connell side by side since 2001.

Universal officially announced the film in February, with Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directing from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. Fraser is also serving as an executive producer, alongside Sean Daniel, who has produced every film in the franchise. Deadline reported that this new installment will be a direct sequel to ‘The Mummy Returns’, effectively disregarding the events of the third film.
The release date has been adjusted as well. Initially set for May 19, 2028, Universal has moved it up to October 15, 2027. Details about the plot remain largely under wraps.

These new images follow an initial wave of set photos released in late September. Weisz was spotted outside London’s British Museum, dressed in a mustard-yellow polka-dot skirt, brown jacket, wide-brimmed hat, and leather gloves, while holding a vintage briefcase and a transistor radio. Fraser was seen on set in Suffolk, driving a vintage silver-and-red rocket car, in a scene reportedly linked to 1957 speed trials.
These details hint at a 1950s setting, placing the story approximately 25 to 30 years after the first film’s 1920s adventure. Production reportedly commenced in August in London and Morocco, suggesting more locations may be unveiled soon.

The cast is also welcoming back familiar faces. John Hannah, Oded Fehr, and Kevin J. O’Connor are all returning, while Michael Johnston and Numan Acar have joined as new cast members. Fraser has hinted that the film will reunite the original cast and revisit locations tied to the earlier films.
Confusion has arisen regarding this project, as another ‘Mummy’ film was released earlier this year. ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’, produced by New Line, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster, starred Jack Reynor and is unrelated to the Universal franchise. Its marketing emphasized that Fraser was not part of it, and it received mixed reviews, grossing $90.6 million worldwide on a $22 million budget.
This leaves the Fraser and Weisz film as the true continuation of the beloved story fans grew up with. Both actors are now Academy Award winners, adding a layer of prestige to a franchise known for its swashbuckling fun.
