‘Snowfall’ left many loose ends when it concluded, and its spinoff is diving into a different aspect of 1990s Los Angeles. With ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga‘ now at its midpoint, each new episode tests the series’ ability to balance personal struggles with street violence.

Created by Malcolm Spellman for FX and Hulu, the series premiered on September 8 and consists of 8 episodes. It centers on Wanda Bell (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John) as they attempt to reinvent themselves within the early 1990s West Coast rap scene. Wanda is banking on her cousin Lamar Kinsey (Asante Blackk) and the unpredictable rapper Artillery, while Leon seeks to escape his past through his free legal clinic.

The previous episode, ‘Homecoming’, revealed shocking truths about the Kinsey family. Lamar discovered that his mother Rochelle had died after a violent encounter with his father, a secret unveiled by his grandmother Gerty and grandfather Big Daddy during a family meeting.

The latest episode, ‘Exit Wounds’, aired on October 13 and was penned by Michael Kastelein, with direction by Rashidi Natara Harper. It picks up after Lamar’s intense conversation with Gerty and nearly a month after the release of the album ‘Back 2 Da Hood’. During an interview with DJ Block, Artillery mentions the anticipation for new music from Lamar before they can proceed with the album.

This puts immense pressure on Lamar, who hasn’t produced any music in three weeks. Wanda’s concern grows when she learns this, and a meeting at the label exacerbates the situation. Jenny suggests that Artillery’s album will require multiple producers instead of just Lamar, intending to alleviate his stress but ultimately adding to it.

The narrative of music intertwines with the surrounding violence. Artillery and his crew face an attack in broad daylight, while Dara confronts DG in his office. Leonard attempts to smooth things over with an advance, explaining how Artillery can receive a monthly stipend against future earnings, a setup DG privately compares to the pimping game.

DG also meets with Leon, handing over a bag of cash from the swap meet. His true intention is to uncover how Leon managed to sell so many copies of ‘Back 2 Da Hood’. Leon remains composed and offers to review DG’s contracts, voicing his concerns to James, as DG has all of his artists tied up in these deals, leaving Wanda and Lamar unable to navigate them alone.

Tensions escalate when Artillery expresses his dissatisfaction with Lamar’s work. They clash over their respective hardships, leading Lamar to storm out after Artillery criticizes him for involving his mother in the music. James later arrives to discuss why he concealed the truth, revealing his loss of faith in Big Daddy and his turn to the streets, not wanting Lamar to follow the same path.

This prompts Andy to take Lamar into the streets for tagging, which reignites his creativity. He returns to the label with a fresh album concept centered on rebirth and return, illustrating both Artillery’s and Lamar’s journeys through Los Angeles after their struggles. He even rebrands himself as Nex, also known as DJ Nex.

DG already has a list of producers lined up, leaving Wanda at a crossroads. Ultimately, she decides to trust Lamar, supporting his vision over Jenny’s producer suggestions. DG makes it clear that while Lamar can continue for now, he will be replaced if he falters.

The episode concludes with a violent turn. Deon shoots Keith dead in retaliation for robbing DG and flaunting his stolen watch, which Keith wore openly as a sign of disrespect. Deon then places Keith’s gun in his hand and walks away.

The ending encapsulates the episode’s themes. Wanda opts for loyalty over a safer career choice, while DG’s crew illustrates that disrespect in this world comes with deadly consequences. One critic noted that ‘Back 2 Da Hood’ could be a unique success, but involving too many producers might dilute what makes Lamar’s work distinctive.

With only two episodes left and the next one set to air on October 20, the album appears to be coming together, but the stakes are rising for everyone involved.
