Inde Navarrette Teases Her Unique Take on Rogue in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot
The announcement of Inde Navarrette as Rogue in Marvel’s ‘X-Men‘ reboot has ignited considerable discussion among fans. Just a year ago, the ‘Obsession’ star was relatively unknown, and now audiences are eager to see how she will interpret one of the franchise’s most cherished mutants.
Navarrette’s ascent in Hollywood has been impressive. Her film ‘Obsession’, produced on a modest budget of $750,000, has grossed over $500 million globally, and her portrayal of Nikki Freeman has made her one of the year’s most talked-about actresses. She has shared her experience of meeting Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ director Jake Schreier prior to her casting announcement, revealing that her dream role was actually Mystique instead of Rogue.
Recently, she provided insight into her approach to the character. During an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast, recorded in front of 500 students at Chapman University, Navarrette expressed that acting allows her to fully embody a different persona, and Rogue is one of those characters. She emphasized her intention to honor the Marvel writers and Schreier’s vision while also “adding my own sauce.”
Marvel officially introduced Navarrette as Rogue during the D23 event in August, alongside the new cast. Sadie Sink will portray Jean Grey, a role first hinted at in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, with Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost. Maya Boyd will take on the role of Storm, while Adam Driver surprised attendees as the villain Mister Sinister.
The casting announcement received mixed reactions. Many fans had anticipated Cailee Spaeny would be cast based on rumors, leading some to question whether Navarrette’s rapid rise to fame influenced her selection. Lenore Zann, the voice of Rogue in ‘X-Men ’97’, publicly congratulated her on the role.
Navarrette has expressed her commitment to honoring the character. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, she mentioned that she has thoroughly studied Rogue and aims to respect the filmmakers’ vision, what she hopes to see as a fan, and her own interpretation. However, she has not disclosed any plot details or how Marvel intends to differentiate its version of Anna Marie from previous portrayals.
Kevin Feige has characterized Schreier’s film as being very youth-oriented, hinting that it will focus on Jean Grey’s story. He also confirmed that this film will kick off a series of projects under Marvel’s Mutant Saga. The movie is slated for release on May 5, 2028, following ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
Schreier, known for directing ‘Thunderbolts*’, is at the helm of this project. The screenplay is credited to Lee Sung Jin, the creator of ‘Beef’, Joanna Calo, who contributed to ‘Thunderbolts*’, and Michael Lesslie, who wrote the original draft. Lesslie’s pitch was reportedly inspired by ‘X-Men ’97’, proposing a cast modeled after that animated series.
Navarrette has shared her admiration for Schreier, citing his work on ‘Thunderbolts*’ as a reason for her excitement. She told Variety that the film rekindled her love for Marvel through character-driven storytelling, making it a fitting collaboration for a narrative centered on young mutants discovering their identities.
As of now, no footage or first look at Rogue has been revealed, and the film is still in pre-production. Navarrette’s remarks indicate her intention to respect the character’s legacy while infusing her own interpretation. This is a delicate task, particularly for a character with such a passionate fanbase.
With the film still over a year and a half away, there will be ample opportunity for speculation. The mutant era of the MCU is just beginning, and Rogue will play a pivotal role in it.
