Few shows make a ‘The Lowdown’ recap as enjoyable to write as FX’s Tulsa-set neo-noir, where every investigation begins with a poor decision and an even worse outfit. Season 2 kicks off with a back-to-back premiere, and the tale of Ethan Hawke’s self-proclaimed “truthstorian” has already taken a bizarre turn.

Season 1 concluded with Lee Raybon solving the Washberg family mystery, and the new season starts with him receiving recognition for it. A local citizen journalist award is a type of success Lee struggles to manage. Hawke shared with TV Insider that Lee is facing an existential crisis regarding the futility of success.

This crisis drives the two episodes, “The Rupidoop” and “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound.” Together, they introduce a new mystery involving a public defender, a missing inmate, and a prison guard network that clearly harbors secrets. They also mark the return of a man Lee has long pretended was dead.

Lee arrives at the ceremony under the influence of mushrooms, turning his acceptance speech into a tirade against sellouts. He also takes jabs at his father and ends up breaking the award. His daughter Francis, who is present, is not impressed.

Later at the bar, Lee encounters Ginger, a public defender portrayed by Betty Gilpin. She informs him that two men have been tailing her, and Lee soon spots them in the bathroom, one sporting an SS tattoo. Ginger manages to slip away, and Lee finds himself beaten by writers offended by his speech.

The following day, Lee offers to assist Ginger. She reveals that a former client, Mekko Dean, has gone silent in prison, and her connection to him is more personal than professional. Lee volunteers to visit Boontill Prison under the guise of being press.

Upon arrival, the man who meets him appears to be an impostor, which is the “rupidoop” referenced in the title: a fake inmate used to deceive outsiders. Killer Mike’s Cyrus mocks Lee for mentioning Ginger’s name to one of them, and it turns out one of the guards is also one of the men who followed her. Later, Lee hears gunshots at Ginger’s place and discovers a masked man fleeing after she fired her weapon.

The premiere begins with an elderly man wandering a highway, claiming to be Lee Raybon Sr. Played by Tommy Lee Jones, he is the estranged grifter father Lee told Francis was dead. The first episode concludes with him being brought to his son.

The second episode opens with Lee Sr. eating beans at the bookshop desk while Lee demands to know if he’s genuine. Lee hasn’t seen him in 17 years, and Lee Sr. states he came looking after reading about the award. When he introduces himself to Francis as her grandfather, she retorts that her grandfather is dead.

Lee tracks down the guard named McMann through a charity calendar and ends up at a bar called Secrets, where he encounters recently fired corrections officer Chili Franks, played by Paul Schneider. Over a drunken night, Chili grabs a shotgun and dances to Hank Williams Jr., then drives Lee to McMann’s house, hoping to regain his boss’s favor. McMann chases Lee through the trees, demanding to know Mekko’s whereabouts, and then shoots Chili in the head.

This question is the biggest clue of the premiere. McMann may not be the one responsible for Mekko’s disappearance, but he clearly wants to know where the prisoner is. Meanwhile, Ginger recruits a petty criminal named Pookie, played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse, to gather information on Mekko.

Thus, the ending leaves Lee with three dilemmas: a missing inmate, a prison mafia willing to kill, and a father who may have ulterior motives. One review described the second episode as peak ‘The Lowdown’, and early critic reactions have been positive.
