Method dressing has emerged as a hot topic during modern press tours. Instead of merely selecting beautiful gowns, celebrities and their stylists create wardrobes that reflect the narratives they are promoting. For a Jane Austen adaptation, this translates to an abundance of lace, corsetry, and romance.

Daisy Edgar-Jones has embraced this concept more than most. The 28-year-old actress has been promoting ‘Sense and Sensibility’ across three continents, with stylist Dani Michelle curating her looks for each stop from London to Los Angeles. Her goal was to connect each outfit back to her character, Elinor Dashwood, and the era itself.

Now in New York, Edgar-Jones captivated audiences in a sheer archival Rodarte gown. This stunning look comes just before the film’s US release this Friday, perfectly embodying the romantic essence of the story.

The dress hails from Rodarte’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection. It features a sheer lace midi design adorned with intricate gold and ivory embroidery, highlighted by a striking beaded heart motif on the bodice. The neckline is trimmed with white ruffled lace, while sheer mesh side panels and subtle metallic threading add depth to the ensemble.

Translucent tulle layers cascade over her shoulders and down her back. Edgar-Jones completed the look with gold Jude Mixer sandals and a romantic half-up hairstyle, featuring soft waves and bangs. This outfit feels like a contemporary homage to Regency romance.

The Rodarte gown is just one of many highlights from her tour. Edgar-Jones began her journey at the London premiere in a custom Vivienne Westwood dress crafted from champagne silk, featuring an asymmetrical hem, a corseted bodice, and a gathered train. In Berlin, she dazzled in a vintage Giorgio Armani Privé gown from spring 2005, complemented by Boucheron jewelry.

For the Sydney premiere, she opted for a sheer nude Miu Miu gown embellished with silver sequins, layered over a loosely tied corset. This look pays homage to the Regency-era short stays rather than the more constrictive Victorian style. At the Los Angeles premiere, she wore an archival 1999 Chloé piece designed by Stella McCartney, in lavender to reflect Elinor’s costumes.

She also changed into a corseted micro-mini-dress by Dilara Findikoglu for the after-party. In New York alone, she showcased six different looks, ranging from Chloé and Rodarte to a Burberry trench paired with jeans. This variety illustrates how the theme can remain flexible while still embracing its romantic roots.

‘Sense and Sensibility’ is directed by Georgia Oakley, who made her feature debut with ‘Blue Jean’, based on a screenplay by novelist Diana Reid. Edgar-Jones portrays the sensible Elinor, while Esmé Creed-Miles plays her passionate sister Marianne. The cast also includes Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, and Fiona Shaw.

Produced by Working Title, the studio behind other Austen adaptations like the 2005 ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and 2020’s ‘Emma’, this film is the eighth screen version of the 1811 novel. The most recognized previous adaptation is Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 1995 film featuring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, and Hugh Grant.

Critics have responded positively, though not unanimously. One review described it as a fine but not strictly necessary Austen remake, with Edgar-Jones and MacKay standing out. Another review awarded it a B+, praising its straightforward approach and highlighting Creed-Miles as a breakout star.

Whether it can emerge from Lee’s shadow remains to be seen. However, with a lavish press tour and a cast that clearly understands the material, the film has generated significant buzz. Edgar-Jones’ wardrobe has undoubtedly contributed to keeping Austen in the spotlight.
