This season has seen its share of cliffhangers, but few have sparked as much speculation as the one that concluded last week’s episode. The ending of ‘Dark Matter’ is now clarified, revealing who stepped through that door and its implications for Charlie’s quest. Apple TV’s multiverse thriller takes a thoughtful and emotional approach to the unfolding narrative.

In the previous episode, Charlie (Oakes Fegley) made a bold decision to enter the Box, hoping to locate his twin brother Max, who passed away at the age of 4 in Charlie’s original universe. He found himself in the home of a woman named Laurel, portrayed by Margo Martindale, who provided him with guidance on how to search for Max. Just as a door clicked open, Charlie glanced at someone off-screen, and Laurel reassured him that everything was fine.

This week’s episode takes its time to revisit that moment, diving deep into the past and spending most of its runtime exploring Laurel’s backstory. When the narrative finally returns to the present, Laurel introduces Charlie to a version of his father, Jason, who never reunited with his family.

Years earlier, a different Jason and Amanda emerged from the Box into Laurel’s living room, with Amanda suffering from a severe injury. Laurel, a former military and civilian nurse, tended to Amanda’s wounds and patched up Jason’s head injury, explaining her familiarity with the Box and its regular visitors.

Laurel’s world is much darker. A dirty bomb attack on Chicago transformed her spacious home into a makeshift hospital, and an increasingly authoritarian regime stifled dissent and free expression. Her beloved Rory was arrested for possessing prohibited materials and died in custody, leading Laurel to shut herself off from others, including her friend Pat.

Despite Jason’s longing to return to Daniela and Charlie, he remains by Amanda’s side, unwilling to abandon her. Over time, the two develop a deep bond. Meanwhile, Laurel encounters various visitors, including a free-spirited version of Leighton and a traumatized Blair, each impacting her life as she influences theirs, eventually prompting her to resume her walks around the block.

When Jason and Amanda return, their journey yields no results, so Laurel shares her insights on channeling thoughts and emotions toward those they wish to find. Amanda chooses to remain in Laurel’s world, where her counterpart never left Brazil, to avoid distracting Jason. He re-enters the Box in search of answers but finds his thoughts consistently returning to her. Ultimately, he decides to return and build a life with Amanda.

This is the Jason that Charlie meets. Laurel introduces him to this version of his father, who embraces Charlie and encourages him to seek out Max. This advice may not align with what the original Jason would have wanted, but it reflects what this Jason has learned about valuing the journey over the destination.

Charlie agrees to continue his search and re-enters the Corridor, leaving his fate uncertain. This scene serves as both a farewell and a blessing, emphasizing the myriad paths available to a single individual across the multiverse.

Critics have responded positively to the episode. Ready Steady Cut’s Jonathon Wilson claims it rivals the series’ finest moments, praising its focused narrative, Martindale’s exceptional performance, and a script by Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry and Blake Crouch that prioritizes character over convoluted physics.

In other developments this season, Daniela has cut her vacation with Gabriel short to pursue her son in the multiverse. With Charlie back in the Corridor, the urgency of that pursuit has intensified.

New episodes are released every Friday through October 30, leaving only a few installments to resolve the ongoing storylines. Charlie’s quest for Max, Daniela’s search, and the repercussions of Leighton’s actions all require closure before the season finale.
