Denis Villeneuve Explains Why James Bond Is His Next Project After ‘Dune: Part Three’
Few directors have immersed themselves in a single fictional universe as much as Denis Villeneuve has with ‘Dune’. He first adapted Frank Herbert’s desert planet in 2021, followed by ‘Dune: Part Two’, which garnered 2 Oscars and grossed over $714 million globally. Now, he is preparing to conclude the trilogy.
This level of commitment can be taxing. Villeneuve initially intended to take a break from the Known Universe after the second film, but he quickly transitioned into the third installment. He has also mentioned that adapting ‘Dune Messiah’ would signify the end of his journey on Arrakis.
So, what lies ahead? The answer has been known for some time: the next James Bond film. Villeneuve recently shared why he chose 007 as his follow-up to ‘Dune’, and his reasoning is quite insightful. He told Empire that he realized he would need a powerful rocket to escape Arrakis, and when he was approached to direct the next Bond film, he felt it was precisely what he needed.
This comment comes from Empire’s exclusive cover story for the December issue, set to hit newsstands on October 22. The issue also features stars like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, Jason Momoa, and Florence Pugh. The interview delves into how ‘Dune: Part Three’ will differ from its predecessors.
Villeneuve aims to maintain the same essence while crafting a distinctly different film with altered pacing. The story is set 17 years after ‘Part Two’, with Paul now serving as Emperor and reshaping the galaxy. While the characters remain the same, the world has undergone significant changes.
He emphasizes the need to approach the material with severity and avoid complacency. This mindset may explain why he views a high-profile spy franchise as the ideal remedy. After three films in the same universe, a fresh start could be creatively essential.
In June 2025, Amazon MGM Studios officially hired Villeneuve to direct the upcoming Bond film. Steven Knight, known for creating ‘Peaky Blinders’, was announced as the writer on July 31, 2025. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing, with Tanya Lapointe serving as an executive producer.
This marks a significant moment for the franchise, as it will be the first Bond film developed under Amazon MGM’s creative oversight, following a deal with longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. It also comes after 2021’s ‘No Time to Die’, which featured Daniel Craig’s final performance as 007.
Currently, there is no official title or release date. Reports indicate that production is expected to begin in 2027, with a targeted release in November 2028. Knight mentioned in September 2026 that the first draft of the script is complete, and he knows which actor he is writing for.
The biggest question remains who will take on the role of Bond. Deadline reported that Villeneuve plans to start the casting search once he wraps up ‘Dune: Part Three’, with filmmakers seeking an unknown British actor in his late 20s or early 30s. This criterion eliminates most of the names speculated online.
In May 2026, Amazon MGM released a rare official statement denying that anyone had already been cast. At CinemaCon, the studio’s head of film, Courtenay Valenti, confirmed that the project is on track and that updates will be announced soon. The wait may soon come to an end.
Fans will be pleased to hear that IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond expressed hopes that Bond would also be filmed using IMAX cameras, similar to Villeneuve’s approach with ‘Dune’. This would be a significant draw for a franchise built on visual spectacle.

For now, Villeneuve is focused on completing his ‘Dune’ trilogy. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, distributed by Warner Bros., and was filmed primarily on 65mm film, with sequences in IMAX. The filming took place from July to November 2025 in Budapest and Abu Dhabi.
After that, the spotlight will shift to 007. Transitioning from Herbert’s desert epic to Fleming’s world of spies is a significant leap, but few filmmakers are better suited to make it work. If ‘Dune’ served as the launchpad, Bond appears to be the destination.
