DC Studios has a reputation for revealing casting news in unexpected ways, and their latest announcement is no exception. James Gunn has confirmed the lead roles for the upcoming adult animated series ‘Mister Miracle’, following an accidental leak by his DC Studios partner, Peter Safran.

In response to a fan post regarding the leak on social media, Gunn humorously remarked that he wasn’t sure it could get more official than that, jokingly referring to Safran’s tendency for “loose lips.” This playful comment effectively confirmed the information Safran shared during a recent interview.

Safran disclosed that Josh Hutcherson will voice Scott Free, the titular character, while Mackenzie Davis will lend her voice to Big Barda. This casting marks a significant milestone for a series that has been in development for over a year.

The details were shared by Safran in an interview with IGN, conducted around the world premiere of ‘Clayface’. While discussing DC Studios’ future projects following the Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros., he casually mentioned the lead voice actors while praising Tom King’s contributions to the series.

Safran noted that King gained valuable experience while co-creating and executive producing ‘Lanterns’, and he adapted his ‘Mister Miracle’ comic entirely on his own, writing all eight episodes. He described the scripts as dynamite before revealing the lead voice cast, all without a formal announcement or trailer.

The series is based on King and artist Mitch Gerads’ acclaimed 12-issue comic book run, published from 2017 to 2019, which won an Eisner Award. Scott Free is a world-renowned escape artist married to the Apokoliptian warrior Big Barda, but their life on Earth has taken a dark turn.

With war raging between Apokolips and New Genesis, Scott’s adoptive father, Darkseid, appears to have captured the Anti-Life Equation, the ultimate weapon for universal domination. The official synopsis poses the question: can Scott pull off the ultimate escape from death itself?

King is set to serve as showrunner and executive producer. The project was first announced at the Annecy animation festival in June 2025 and is already in production at Warner Bros. Animation, making it the second adult animated series from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, following ‘Creature Commandos’.

Hutcherson is known for his roles in ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’, while Davis has starred in ‘Halt and Catch Fire’, ‘Station Eleven’, ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, and ‘Blade Runner 2049’. Both actors are newcomers to the DC Universe and are the first leads confirmed for the show.

In August, Nathan Fillion revealed that he voices Guy Gardner in the series, a character he portrays in live action in ‘Superman’ and ‘Lanterns’. This connection highlights the close relationship between the animation and live-action aspects of the DC Universe. Gunn has previously stated that anyone cast in a major animated project within this continuity will also portray their live-action counterpart, as seen with Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

Currently, neither Scott Free nor Big Barda has been announced for any upcoming DCU film, leaving the door open for Hutcherson and Davis to potentially appear in live action.

Safran mentioned to Collider that ‘Mister Miracle’ is aiming for a 2028 release, although no specific premiere date has been set. He confirmed that the series is part of the DC Universe, addressing a question that had lingered since the announcement, and indicated that it could span multiple seasons. With the story focusing on Scott, Barda, and their child, there are numerous directions the narrative could take.

While the streaming platform has not been officially confirmed, several sources suggest it will be available on HBO Max. The timeline for animation releases is typically longer than that of live-action projects, which explains the delay.

This announcement comes at a busy time for the studio. Safran has indicated that DC’s plans remain unchanged following the Skydance acquisition, although the next live-action project is still undecided and ‘Lanterns’ Season 2 remains unconfirmed. He also mentioned that an ‘Absolute Batman’ project is in early development with Scott Snyder working on scripts.

The casting of ‘Mister Miracle’ contributes to an expanding animated lineup that began with ‘Creature Commandos’, which is currently in production for its second season on HBO Max. This also reflects King’s growing influence at DC, as his comics are the foundation for the upcoming ‘Supergirl’ movie.

Whether intentional or not, the casual nature of this news release aligns with the studio’s style and has generated significant buzz for a series that is still over a year away.
