The Academy Museum Gala is renowned for its dramatic flair, often likened to the “Met Gala of the West.” This annual fundraiser for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures showcases stunning fashion right after Fashion Month, and by the time Ana de Armas made her entrance, expectations were sky-high.

Held on October 17 in Los Angeles, the sixth annual gala honored Charlize Theron with the Icon Award, Colman Domingo with the Vantage Award, and John Carpenter with the Luminary Award, while Taylor Swift was set to perform. The evening was presented by Rolex and co-chaired by Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg, and Kate Capshaw.

Ana de Armas captivated the cameras in a strapless black velvet gown featuring a sculpted sweetheart bodice. The daring neckline plunged into a sheer panel at the center, while the fitted silhouette transitioned into a voluminous mermaid skirt that pooled dramatically around her feet.

In the video clip from the red carpet, she posed against softly draped curtains with her hands on her hips, allowing the sweeping skirt to take center stage. The velvet fabric absorbed the light beautifully, while the sheer panel created a striking contrast that was hard to ignore.

Her styling was sleek and sophisticated. With her brunette hair cascading straight past her shoulders and a sparkling statement necklace adding a touch of glamour against the dark fabric, she exuded confidence and timeless elegance, steering clear of fleeting trends.

This isn’t her first time donning a black gown. At the 2025 Oscars, she wore a black column gown with a silver halter neckline, accessorized with a diamond ring and earrings while presenting at the ceremony after her 2023 nomination for ‘Blonde’.

Earlier this year, she presented at the 2026 Golden Globes in a custom black Louis Vuitton gown adorned with a glittering finish and a thigh-high slit. Later, she switched into a sheer black lace Louis Vuitton gown featuring floral detailing for an after-party. Clearly, when de Armas opts for black, she goes all out.

Her fashion journey has been closely associated with Louis Vuitton, which crafted the custom gown she wore to the ‘Ballerina’ premiere in Paris—a strapless corseted design with a black satin bodice and a column skirt embellished with three-dimensional ivory blooms.

This consistency is a key reason her red carpet appearances continue to make an impact. She has a distinctive taste for sculptural shapes and bold contrasts, with each new look building on the last.

Her visibility in fashion is complemented by a busy schedule. Following her role in ‘Ballerina’, the first major spinoff of the ‘John Wick’ franchise, she is involved in several upcoming projects. These include the sci-fi horror film ‘Deeper’ with Tom Cruise, directed by Doug Liman, and the psychological thriller ‘Sweat’, where she portrays a fitness influencer.

Additionally, she will star alongside Sebastian Stan in the espionage thriller ‘Impunity’ and with Benicio Del Toro and Cameron Diaz in ‘Reenactment’, which is currently in post-production. On the small screen, she is set to appear in the Apple TV+ series ‘Bananas’ with Oscar Isaac.

This diverse range of roles, spanning action, thrillers, and prestige television, contributes to the sense that every appearance is an event. Her gala look demonstrated that she is as at home on the red carpet as she is on set.

While many gowns attract attention, few manage to strike a balance between classic and daring. The deep velvet, sheer center panel, and exaggerated mermaid train lend a cinematic quality that perfectly aligns with a night dedicated to film.

It also embodies the spirit of the gala itself, which celebrates bold choices. Ana de Armas certainly made a statement while keeping her styling elegantly understated.
