Sofía Vergara has been making waves on the red carpet this year. She dazzled in a custom Zuhair Murad gown paired with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March. More recently, she graced the 78th Emmy Awards in a stunning custom Laura Basci strapless mermaid gown adorned with sequins, lace embroidery, and sheer illusion panels.

Her appearance at the Academy Museum Gala came with high expectations. Often referred to as the Met Gala of the West, the 2026 edition showcased an array of sculptural couture. The timing of the gala, right after global fashion weeks, typically highlights fresh-off-the-runway designs.

The 6th annual gala took place on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. Charlize Theron was honored with the Icon Award, Colman Domingo received the Vantage Award, and John Carpenter was presented with the Luminary Award, with Rolex as a sponsor and Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg, and Kate Capshaw co-chairing the event. Among the star-studded guests, Vergara’s floral couture gown became one of the most talked-about looks of the night, transforming the red carpet into a vibrant garden.

Vergara wore an exquisite Elie Saab Spring 2025 couture gown, embellished with flowers, beads, and shimmer. The one-shoulder design featured soft lilac petals cascading along the neckline and down one arm, complemented by a sequined texture that sparkled in the light.

The gown’s base was a nude, sheer fabric adorned with silver beads and tiny sequins. Bright apple-green beaded vines elegantly twisted from the hem to the bust, while a large lilac flower graced the lower skirt. The dress hugged her figure closely before flaring into a soft mermaid-style finish.

With such an intricate gown, Vergara opted for understated styling. She accessorized with round stud earrings, a delicate gold bracelet, and a green stone ring on her right hand that echoed the gown’s vine details. Her beauty look was equally simple, featuring loose, center-parted waves and softly defined eyes with a neutral rose lip, allowing the gown’s florals to take center stage.

Vergara’s look was part of a broader trend embracing dimensional textures, highlighted by the lifelike stack of purple blooms along her neckline. Other stars also showcased sculptural 3D floral designs on their gowns, creating a red carpet atmosphere reminiscent of an art exhibit. Vergara’s one-shoulder petals fit seamlessly into this artistic theme.

Elie Saab is no stranger to the red carpet, having dressed Eva Longoria at last year’s gala in a stunning pink and white sequin gown. Vergara’s interpretation of the label showcases how different styles can be brought to life through various silhouettes. Compared to her recent glamorous looks, this gown represents a whimsical shift, focusing on color, petals, and intricate craftsmanship.

The evening featured music from Taylor Swift, who arrived in a pale blue pleated silk Dior gown with a beaded bow and performed “The Fate of Ophelia” live for the first time. Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber were also among the guests, making the carpet feel like a worthy rival to its East Coast counterpart.

The gala serves to raise funds for the Academy Museum’s exhibitions, public screenings, and educational programs, giving the fashion a meaningful purpose beyond the glamour. While Vergara’s gown may not have been the loudest on the carpet, it certainly stood out as one of the most imaginative.
