Dan Lin Departs Netflix as Film Chief Amid Major Layoffs and Leadership Changes
Netflix is experiencing a tumultuous period. In just a few days, the streaming giant has laid off thousands of employees, reshuffled its top creative leadership, and left Hollywood speculating about its future direction. This upheaval has transformed one of the most influential content operations in the entertainment industry.
The shake-up began last week with the elimination of approximately 1,000 jobs, accounting for about 6% of the workforce, marking the largest cut in the company’s history. Chief content officer Bela Bajaria was subsequently let go after nearly a decade, with former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice stepping in to take her place, effective October 26.
Now, another significant figure has exited. According to a Variety report, Dan Lin has been dismissed from his role as Netflix’s head of film after nearly three years. Sources indicate he was let go at the start of the weekend and is expected to address his teams on Monday.
The timing is noteworthy. Lin reportedly attended Saturday’s Academy Museum Gala and was seen at a screening for ‘La Bola Negra’ on the Netflix campus the following evening. A spokesperson for Netflix has not provided immediate comments.
Lin’s departure follows the exit of several close colleagues. In the days leading up to his dismissal, layoffs affected his right-hand man, Doug Belgrad, as well as Sheroum Kim, who headed the film division’s indie sector. Other high-ranking executives, including several television leaders, were also let go.
Insiders had previously suggested that Lin’s position was secure until Rice’s arrival, making this sudden change unexpected. However, speculation about his job security had been circulating for weeks. Regardless, the film division now faces a leadership void at a crucial juncture.
Lin joined Netflix in early 2024, taking over from longtime film chief Scott Stuber. He came from his own production company, Rideback, known for creating the ‘LEGO’ film franchise, adaptations of Stephen King’s ‘It’, and the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ films. During his time, he reported to Bajaria.
Stuber’s tenure positioned Netflix as a go-to destination for renowned filmmakers, offering substantial budgets while traditional studios tightened their belts. The streamer consistently garnered best picture nominations, although top awards remained elusive. Lin’s time, while marked by a slower pace, still included some significant projects, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.
During his tenure, Lin greenlit or acquired 88 films, including Charlize Theron’s action movie ‘Apex’, ‘Emilia Perez’, ‘Here Comes the Flood’, and ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’. Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ is also on the upcoming slate.
The last two films are set to premiere exclusively in IMAX theaters before becoming available for streaming. This represents a significant shift in Netflix’s approach to premium releases and means the next film chief will inherit some of the company’s most ambitious projects.
This shake-up follows months of reports about engagement issues and stagnant stock prices, alongside a failed bid for Warner Bros. Netflix has also gone over a year without a major title that captured the cultural zeitgeist, according to various reports. The company seems to be banking on new leadership to turn things around.
Rice’s appointment is anticipated to introduce a fresh strategy. He will oversee Netflix’s global content organization, which includes series, films, and live events across all regions. Reports suggest the focus will shift towards creating major, buzzworthy hits.
It remains uncertain who will succeed Lin. A new film chief is expected to be appointed once Rice officially takes over. Lin may potentially return to Rideback, the company he founded.
For filmmakers, agents, and producers with projects at Netflix, the uncertainty is palpable. Many deals were established based on relationships with executives who are no longer with the company. The coming weeks will likely reveal the extent of these changes.
For now, Hollywood is watching closely. A studio that once seemed invincible is undergoing its most significant reorganization in years.
