Doctor Doom’s NYCC Lab Features Symbiote Weapon Sparking Fan Theories
Marvel has a history of using conventions as a storytelling medium, and New York Comic Con 2026 was no different. This year, the most intriguing Easter eggs weren’t found on screens but rather on the shelves of a villain’s laboratory.
At NYCC, which took place from October 8 to 11, Marvel showcased a recreation of Doctor Doom’s lab as part of its ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ campaign. The display was adjacent to a Latverian marketplace booth, crafted with Heroes & Villains and inspired by Doom’s homeland, featuring stained-glass-style windows and Doom’s flag at the entrance. Other Marvel booths also highlighted ‘Doomsday’ costumes and photo opportunities.
However, the real focus was on the items displayed in Doom’s lab. Among them was a Symbiote weapon, which some sources referred to as a Venom Bomb—a bio-weapon introduced nearly two decades ago in the comics capable of transforming even the mightiest Avengers into Venom symbiotes. Other notable artifacts included Cyclops’ visor, a broken piece of the Silver Surfer’s board, Ultron’s head, Thanos’ cracked helmet, the Ultimate Nullifier, and a fragment of Mjolnir.

The presentation seemed intentional, with one analysis suggesting that Doom is not merely building an army but rather collecting powerful artifacts from across the multiverse. This marks a significant shift in how Marvel is portraying its new villain, depicting him as a collector of trophies instead of a typical conqueror.
Each object corresponds to real storylines. Cyclops’ visor and Silver Surfer’s board connect to the X-Men and Fantastic Four narratives, while Ultron’s head and Thanos’ helmet reference past Avengers threats. The symbiote piece hints at the Spider-Man aspect of the MCU, with some fans linking it to the symbiote sample left in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.
This connection has fueled speculation among fans. Although Tom Holland is not officially part of the announced ‘Doomsday’ cast, the initial trailer provided no indication of Spider-Man’s presence. Insiders have shared conflicting rumors, with some asserting he won’t appear in the film while others suggest a version of Spider-Man might show up.
Holland himself has been vague, telling interviewers during the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ press tour that fans will need to watch the movie to find out. ‘Brand New Day’ premiered on July 31, and some fans believe the symbiote display could clarify its mixed-reception post-credits scene. Others speculate that Doom might use the symbiote on Spider-Man in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
Not all fans view the display as a promise. Some argue that the lab resembles Doom’s trophy room from Fortnite, suggesting it serves more as fan service than foreshadowing. Another interpretation posits that the symbiote could pave the way for Venom’s introduction in ‘Secret Wars’ rather than ‘Doomsday’, which already has a lot to establish.
Even the weapon itself may be more of a subtle nod. One analysis pointed out that Doom’s collection could be filled with comic references shown briefly, even though they might not be fully utilized. A display does not equate to a script, and Marvel has a history of using set dressing to tease elements that it never fully realizes.

The lab is just the latest in a series of promotional efforts. Earlier this year, the Russo brothers promoted the film at SXSW London with a Doom-themed coffee pop-up filled with Latverian Easter eggs, and a new Doom card has appeared in ‘Magic: The Gathering’. The first full trailer was released in July, and a special trailer was shown exclusively in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.
The studio is clearly eager for fans to scrutinize every detail. With Robert Downey Jr. portraying Doom and a star-studded ensemble that includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Anthony Mackie, the film is set to hit theaters on December 18. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
For now, the lab serves as a teaser rather than a definitive answer, designed to be interpreted that way. If the symbiote does make an appearance on screen, it could indicate a deeper Spider-Man connection long before ‘Secret Wars’. If not, it still reinforces the notion that Doom has been amassing power for quite some time.
Regardless, the upcoming weeks promise more trailers and theories. In the meantime, fans have a plethora of artifacts to contemplate.
