‘Dune: Part Three’ Releases New Teaser as Tickets Go on Sale Worldwide
Denis Villeneuve’s final installment of the ‘Dune’ saga has been meticulously planned for its rollout. Over the past year, the studio has strategically released a steady stream of footage, character reveals, and format announcements, all designed to build anticipation. This careful approach has resulted in an event movie that is selling out theaters even before many fans have had a chance to see more than a few minutes of it.
The upcoming film adapts Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’ and takes place 17 years after the events of ‘Dune: Part Two.’ Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, now an emperor grappling with the fallout of a holy war. Zendaya’s Chani, along with Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem, will also reprise or join the narrative. A trailer released in July showcased Paul confronting threats to his reign, with Chani expressing her anger over his betrayal.
As the film gears up for its release, the studio has shifted focus to ticket sales. A new 24-second teaser has been unveiled, featuring the message ‘Now on Sale’ as pre-sales commence worldwide for all formats and showtimes ahead of the film’s theatrical release on December 18.

The teaser serves more as a ticket announcement than a traditional trailer. It presents a misty, ethereal structure viewed through a cave, with the words ‘Now on Sale’ glowing in gold over the image. The clip emphasizes the film’s December 18 release date while keeping the visuals minimal, a familiar tactic for a franchise that prioritizes atmosphere over exposition.
This promotional strategy mirrors previous campaigns by the studio. Earlier teasers linked to ticket sales provided brief glimpses of characters such as Chani and Princess Irulan, and one featured the Spacing Guild Navigator in his floating tube. The goal is clear: to remind fans that tickets are available and that prime seating will fill up quickly.
The marketing approach reflects the strategy used for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which staggered its ticketing across multiple phases. The initial batch of IMAX 70mm tickets went on sale in April at 19 global locations and sold out in under three hours. A subsequent release, timed with a new teaser, added premium large format screens and special Insider screenings on December 14, 15, and 17.
In comparison, ‘The Odyssey’ reportedly achieved $50 million in IMAX presales and a $52 million global IMAX opening weekend. This success demonstrated to studios the value of early ticket sales for major cinematic events, and ‘Dune: Part Three’ is clearly following a similar blueprint.
The film’s format is integral to its identity. Villeneuve utilized IMAX film cameras for much of the movie, and it is expected to feature 71 minutes in IMAX’s expanded 1.90:1 aspect ratio. Additionally, it has secured a three-week global IMAX exclusivity window, providing a significant advantage on the premium screens that are most sought after.
This scarcity has already led to significant demand. On the morning of October 20, thousands of fans queued online for IMAX 70mm tickets in the UK, where the format will be available at only three venues: the BFI IMAX and The Ronson Theatre at the Science Museum in London, and Vue Manchester Printworks. Earlier IMAX 70mm tickets have also appeared on resale platforms at inflated prices.
The ticket sales coincide with competition, as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is also set to release on December 18, leading to a fan-named showdown dubbed ‘Dunesday.’ Marvel’s film reportedly surpassed $50 million in presales three months ahead of its release, with 70 percent of its advance tickets sold for premium formats outside of IMAX.
While few analysts predict ‘Dune: Part Three’ will outgross its competitor, it doesn’t necessarily need to. With IMAX effectively monopolizing the market through the holiday season and a director who has described this installment as more action-oriented and intense than its predecessors, it stands a strong chance of attracting its own audience. Ultimately, the true test will come when the lights dim in theaters.
