James Spader Discusses Repeated ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Questions About Ultron
Few villains have made a comeback as unexpected as Ultron’s. The menacing AI seemed to be defeated at the end of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ in 2015, and for 11 years, the character remained absent from the MCU. However, Marvel Television surprised fans by bringing James Spader back for ‘VisionQuest,’ and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
This return was orchestrated by showrunner Terry Matalas, who immediately thought of Spader when he needed a powerful presence for Paul Bettany’s Vision to interact with. In the series, Ultron resides in Vision’s mindspace, depicted as a loft-like prison where he spends his time painting and observing the world. Spader also appears in human form, sporting a bushy beard, hats, and long coats that he suggested himself.
The success of ‘VisionQuest’ has drawn new attention to Spader. He mentioned that people frequently ask him whether Ultron will be featured in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and he has commented on how persistent this question has become.
In a recent interview ahead of ‘VisionQuest,’ the 66-year-old actor shared that he has often been approached on the street by fans inquiring about his involvement in various films, including some titles he had never heard of. He noted that the primary question during this press tour is whether Ultron will appear in ‘Doomsday.’ He laughed off the inquiry without confirming anything, keeping the details under wraps.
Others present joined in on the lighthearted banter. Matalas joked that he wouldn’t disclose any information, while Bettany humorously remarked that he had decided to get fired over the matter. Some outlets interpreted these jokes as hints, but no official statements have been made.
The likelihood of Ultron’s return seems limited. He did not receive his own chair during the cast announcement livestream for ‘Doomsday,’ which features a large ensemble. Additionally, the film is focused on introducing Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, establishing a clear antagonist for the story.
Still, ‘VisionQuest’ is the final Marvel release before ‘Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18, so there’s a chance the show could connect to the film in some way. Bettany is also not listed in the announced cast, although he has expressed confidence that he will appear in either ‘Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ He acknowledged that Marvel can change its plans at any moment.

The portrayal of Ultron in ‘VisionQuest’ is significantly different from his character in ‘Age of Ultron.’ Spader has mentioned that the AI has had years to evolve and learn, gaining more life experience than a human could. He describes the character as more authentic and highlights the complex dynamic between Ultron and Vision, which he likens to a mix of father, therapist, and psychopath.
This depth is part of why audiences have embraced the series. Matalas has indicated that the show is centered around Spader and Bettany’s interactions, describing it as a platform for their performances. The show has also climbed to the top of the Disney+ charts, with Ultron frequently cited as a standout element.

The frequency of this question reflects the mindset of Marvel fans. With ‘Doomsday’ set to unite heroes from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, every familiar face feels like a potential return, and a villain like Ultron is a logical candidate. Spader’s amusement indicates he understands this excitement.

For now, the answer remains elusive, and the actor is keeping quiet. Fans will have to wait until the film premieres in December to discover if Ultron has a role, with ‘Secret Wars’ following in December 2027. In the meantime, ‘VisionQuest’ continues to stream weekly on Disney+, offering viewers plenty of Ultron to enjoy.
