When Brad Pitt took home an Oscar for his role as Cliff Booth in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ the stuntman became one of Quentin Tarantino’s most memorable characters. Loyal, laconic, and dangerous, he left audiences eager for more. Now, after seven years, he is set to return in a unique sequel with an intriguing creative team.

The upcoming film, ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,’ features a script by Tarantino and is directed by David Fincher, who has collaborated with Pitt on films like ‘Seven,’ ‘Fight Club,’ and ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.’ Initially, Tarantino planned to direct the film himself but later decided to let Fincher take the reins after Pitt’s persuasion. Netflix acquired the script in April 2025, making it one of the most awaited films on the release calendar.

A fresh look at Pitt in character has emerged through an exclusive from Empire, which will feature the first joint interview with Tarantino and Fincher in an issue set for release on Thursday, October 22. The image depicts Cliff at a bar, arms wide open in a floral shirt, surrounded by shelves of liquor bottles.

The image showcases a more laid-back Cliff than fans might anticipate from a fixer, aligning perfectly with the film’s narrative. Set in 1977, eight years after ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ Cliff has transitioned from stuntman to odd jobs as a projectionist and bartender, while also working as a freelance fixer for Hollywood’s elite.

The bar setting complements his new career path. Empire describes the film as having an ‘Elmore Leonard paperback’ vibe, a term coined by Tarantino himself, hinting at a crime story infused with dry humor and period grit characteristic of both filmmakers.

As per the official synopsis, Cliff receives a call from talent agent Karen Crosby, portrayed by Elizabeth Debicki, representing her client, TV superstar Charlie Peters (Scott Caan), known for performing his own stunts. The cast also includes Carla Gugino as Toni and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as pro football star turned actor Roderick ‘Hot Rod’ Harrison.

Timothy Olyphant reprises his role as James Stacy, with Peter Weller, Corey Fogelmanis, and Karren Karagulian rounding out the ensemble. The trailer released in September hinted at the absence of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton, showcasing mud-soaked bar brawls, car chases, and bags of cash, all captured in Fincher’s signature nighttime aesthetic.

The film’s release strategy is as unconventional as its creative team. It will debut exclusively in IMAX theaters worldwide for two weeks starting November 25, before arriving on Netflix on December 23. This marks the first Netflix film to be released in IMAX theaters globally and Fincher’s first theatrical release since ‘Gone Girl’ in 2014.

Originally, this slot was reserved for Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,’ which Netflix has since moved to a broader theatrical release in February 2027. Notably, Netflix will also report the box office earnings from the IMAX run.

The film is reportedly the most expensive project for both filmmakers, with a budget estimated at $200 million. Fincher’s regular collaborators, including cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, editor Kirk Baxter, and production designer Donald Graham Burt, are on board, with Pitt producing alongside Ceán Chaffin.

Additionally, Tarantino has adapted the material into a novel. ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’ is set to be published by HarperCollins on December 8, providing readers with another avenue to delve into the character’s universe.

For fans of both directors, the combination of Tarantino’s sharp dialogue and Fincher’s meticulous style presents a captivating gamble, one that could result in a classic or an intriguing experiment. With a new image, a trailer, and a distinctive release strategy, the film is poised to finally address that question.
