Taylor Sheridan has become synonymous with streaming success on Paramount+, yet not all of his shows have experienced the same trajectory. ‘Lioness’ began with mixed reviews in 2023 but gained traction to become a cornerstone of the platform. This gradual rise makes its latest chapter particularly significant.

The third season premiered after nearly two years, featuring Zoe Saldaña as CIA operative Joe McNamara, alongside Nicole Kidman, Michael Kelly, and Morgan Freeman. Sheridan penned all eight episodes, which aired weekly from August 2 to September 20, 2026. The premiere attracted 7.1 million viewers within its first week, marking a strong return for a show after such a long hiatus.

Now the finale’s viewership numbers are in, and they are the highest yet. According to an exclusive report from Variety, the ‘Lioness’ finale garnered 9.7 million viewers in its first week, making it the most-watched episode in the series’ history and the fifth most-watched finale of any Paramount+ original series.

The season’s overall figures are equally impressive. Season 3 averaged 8.5 million viewers weekly, a 62% increase over Season 2’s average, with viewership rising consistently throughout its eight-episode run. Nielsen’s report on October 1 also highlighted the show’s first billion-minute viewing week, accumulating a total of 3.9 billion viewing minutes for the season.

The series has also performed well against competitors, appearing on Nielsen’s and Luminate’s top 10 charts for eight consecutive weeks. Earlier seasons benefited from new viewers catching up, and critics have responded positively, with the season holding an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 76% from audiences.

It’s essential to examine these statistics closely. The figures are derived from Paramount+’s internal global data rather than an independent Nielsen count, and Paramount calculates audience size by dividing viewing minutes by episode runtime. Therefore, the 9.7 million figure represents a viewing-equivalent count, not an exact number of individual viewers.

The 62% growth figure compares Season 3’s eight-week run to Season 2’s seven-week release, so it isn’t a perfectly equal comparison. However, this does not diminish the overall trend. By any standard, the show has grown, with the finale marking its peak.

The finale, titled ‘The Unraveling’, likely contributed to the surge in numbers. It revealed that Aaliyah Amrohi, portrayed by Stephanie Nur, was behind Joe’s abduction, linking the season back to events from the first season. Joe returned home to find her house empty and for sale after her husband Neal left with their children.

Saldaña has mentioned that she encouraged Sheridan to pursue that ending, arguing it was the only realistic consequence of Joe’s dedication to her work. She also expressed hope that Joe and Neal’s story continues if the series moves forward. This unresolved narrative thread keeps viewers engaged.

However, despite these record-breaking numbers, Paramount+ has not yet officially renewed ‘Lioness’ for a fourth season. The streamer has previously taken its time with such decisions, with months passing between the conclusion of Season 2 and the announcement of Season 3’s continuation.

Cast members remain optimistic. Jill Wagner, who plays Bobby and is also a producer, has publicly stated her expectation for a fourth season once audiences see Sheridan’s finale. However, some questions remain, including Saldaña’s status, as she reportedly signed a three-season contract as a main cast member and executive producer.

With a cliffhanger like that and impressive viewership numbers, a renewal seems more a matter of when rather than if. All three seasons are currently available for streaming on Paramount+, giving newcomers ample opportunity to catch up before any announcements are made.
