When Will ‘Clayface’ Stream and Release on Digital?
The landscape of comic book movies has seen significant transformation, with major studios moving away from traditional formulas towards bold genre explorations. Warner Bros. and DC Studios are now embracing darker, filmmaker-driven narratives that push the limits of iconic comic lore. As viewing habits rapidly shift between theaters and home viewing, understanding release windows has become essential for today’s moviegoers.
With distribution strategies continually adapting to changing theatrical performances, audiences are now expecting quicker turnarounds for wide releases. The balance between theatrical exclusivity, digital rentals, and subscription streaming often dictates a film’s commercial success. Under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, every new DC production is crafted to effectively navigate both theaters and digital platforms.
This intentional rollout now surrounds ‘Clayface’, the R-rated psychological body horror film directed by James Watkins, which is set to hit theaters on October 23, 2026. Written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, this film marks the third cinematic entry in the new DC Universe, following ‘Superman’ and ‘Supergirl’. James Gunn explained the choice to spotlight such an unconventional villain, stating, “Although it may seem like it, Hollywood isn’t a place where the only way to make a movie is the public voting on what IP they want to see that they’ve seen countless times before,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Before becoming part of the DC Universe, the project was developed alongside Matt Reeves’ separate Gotham universe. Producer Matt Reeves noted, “And as that story started coming together, becoming this sort of tragic love story — THE FLY meets this horror thriller — James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran] took over DC Studios, and that was one of the first things we pitched to them. They loved it so much, they wanted to make it one of the DCU movies,” in an interview published by Batman News. This foundation allowed Watkins to create a horror narrative driven by practical effects, focusing on the disfigured actor Matt Hagen.
Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries stars as Hagen, whose physical trauma leads him to an experimental procedure that alters his reality. Ahead of production, TheWrap confirmed that Naomi Ackie would join Harries as a scientist whose radical treatment changes his flesh. The film, with a budget of $40 million, emphasizes character-driven storytelling over spectacle, supported by David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan.
Before ‘Clayface’ becomes available on subscription streaming, it will first be released on digital video-on-demand platforms for individual purchase and rental. Warner Bros. has consistently followed a reliable digital release pattern for its horror and mid-budget films throughout 2025 and 2026, typically ensuring a theatrical run of about 30 to 45 days.
A relevant example is DC Studios’ own ‘Supergirl’, which was made available on digital platforms 32 days after its theatrical release. Given that ‘Clayface’ premieres just before Halloween, Warner Bros. is likely aiming to attract holiday home viewers before the end of the year. Therefore, fans can expect the film to be available on platforms like Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video between Tuesday, November 24, and Tuesday, December 1, 2026.
For those looking to stream the movie without additional costs, HBO Max will be the primary destination. Warner Bros. Discovery maintains a consistent Pay-1 window, usually keeping films exclusive to theaters and digital purchase for 70 to 77 days. This established window has been applied to both major DC blockbusters and smaller genre films.
Specifically, ‘Supergirl’ debuted on HBO Max 76 days after its theatrical release, following a similar timeline as ‘Superman’. Applying this 70- to 77-day metric to ‘Clayface’ suggests a subscription streaming debut in early January 2027, with Friday, January 8, 2027, being the most likely target date for the horror film to enhance the platform’s winter lineup.
While these dates provide reliable estimates, box office performance could still lead to slight adjustments in the schedule. Projections indicate that ‘Clayface’ may open domestically in the $15 million to $25 million range. Given its controlled $40 million budget, the film does not face the same financial pressures as a typical superhero blockbuster.

If positive word-of-mouth among horror enthusiasts helps sustain ticket sales into November, the studio may extend the theatrical window beyond 45 days. Conversely, if box office returns decline quickly after Halloween, Warner Bros. may expedite the digital rental window to recover costs. Regardless, viewers will have multiple options to enjoy this gruesome DC chapter at home soon.
Are you planning to see ‘Clayface’ in theaters, or will you wait for its digital and streaming release at home?
