Toy aisles often hint at the direction a franchise is taking long before the films hit theaters. When a studio secures a significant licensing agreement, the merchandise frequently serves as the first public indication that a new era is truly beginning. For the DC Universe, that moment is approaching as Mattel re-enters the DC action figure market.

The company regained the DC license through a multi-year agreement announced in February 2025 with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products. Mattel is set to develop a comprehensive range of DC-themed action figures, playsets, accessories, role-play items, and collectibles for adults, with products expected to launch in the latter half of 2026. Previously, they lost broader rights about six years ago to competitors Spin Master and McFarlane Toys.

Recent photos from a trade-show display provide a glimpse of what Mattel’s DCU figures will look like. One image features a figure of David Corenswet’s Superman alongside Krypto, who sports a small red cape, while another showcases a Peacemaker figure in his season 2 attire in front of a box labeled ‘Legacy Collection.’ Mattel has yet to officially announce details regarding either figure, leaving release dates, pricing, and packaging still unknown.

The Peacemaker figure aligns with other early indications. Retailer listings discovered in a German database earlier this fall mentioned a ‘DC Ultimate Edition Peacemaker’ action figure, although these entries were not an official announcement from Mattel. Collectors have noted that Mattel already employs the ‘Ultimate Edition’ label for its premium WWE figures, suggesting that this could mean additional accessories and interchangeable parts.

The pairing of Superman and Krypto is a clever choice. Krypto, Superman’s super-powered canine companion, naturally complements the hero, and the addition of a cape on the dog adds a fun touch to the set.

Mattel has been gradually rolling out its DC strategy. A first wave of 6.5-inch core figures, branded as DC Premiere and aimed primarily at children but designed with collectors in mind, has been available for a few months. This wave features characters like Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and The Flash.

At New York Comic Con on Oct. 8, Mattel revealed the next tier, the DC Legacy Collection, also in a 6.5-inch scale. The line’s inaugural figure is Batman from the ‘Hush’ storyline, complete with a rooftop and Bat-Signal, while other figures showcased included Wonder Woman, Absolute Batman, Catwoman, and build-a-figures of Mongul and Bane. An additional DC Ultimate Edition line, featuring premium figures with enhanced gear and articulation, is also in the works.

Collector releases are set to commence on Jan. 1, 2027, when Mattel plans a livestream to unveil wave line-ups, character rosters, and preorder dates. Mattel’s strategy mirrors its WWE approach, featuring three main lines at three different price points.

The shift in licensing is significant, as McFarlane Toys has been the home for the DC Multiverse line, including figures based on James Gunn’s 2025 ‘Superman’ film, featuring characters like Ultraman and Metamorpho. Meanwhile, Hot Toys has released a sixth-scale Peacemaker figure inspired by John Cena’s second-season appearance. Mattel’s entry adds another major toy manufacturer to the DCU at a time when the universe is expanding.

This timing is also crucial. ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 premiered in August 2025, and James Gunn has described it as a prequel to ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ which is set to release on July 9, 2027, and has already completed principal photography. The pairing of Peacemaker with Superman emphasizes how closely the two projects are being aligned.

For DC Studios, merchandise plays a vital role in establishing a lasting universe, especially as the studio prepares to release ‘Clayface’ on Oct. 23 and gears up for ‘Man of Tomorrow.’ A figure line that features a screen-accurate Superman, Krypto, and Peacemaker provides the new continuity with a tangible presence on store shelves, not just on screen.

The unknown details are significant. Mattel has not disclosed which figures will be released first, whether the DCU items will be part of the Legacy Collection or the Ultimate Edition tier, or how many characters from the films and series will receive toys. These answers are anticipated during the January livestream.
