Marvel’s Disney+ series often weave hidden connections throughout their narratives. A single line can link a new show to seemingly unrelated parts of the MCU, and ‘VisionQuest’ has accomplished this twice in one scene. The latest Easter eggs in ‘VisionQuest’ extend from a global crime syndicate to one of Marvel’s most unusual Halloween specials.

This series marks the conclusion of a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along.’ It follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he evades a bounty hunter named Paladin (Todd Stashwick), who has been contracted by an enigmatic client. The show premiered on Oct. 13 and consists of 8 episodes, culminating in a finale on Nov. 10.

Episode 3, titled ‘Reboot,’ was released on Oct. 20 alongside episode 4, ‘Malware.’ In this episode, Paladin shares war stories with his Handler, portrayed by Diane Morgan, during which they reference the Ten Rings Syndicate and ‘Werewolf by Night,’ along with nods to the Punisher and Daredevil.

The mention of the Ten Rings is directly linked to Paladin’s equipment. The Handler humorously suggests sending a gift basket to the Ten Rings Syndicate for supplying his adamantium chest armor. This clever detail explains the source of such a rare metal for a mercenary and hints at his connections to some of the MCU’s most significant organizations.

The Ten Rings has undergone recent changes. In ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) takes control of the group in a post-credits scene, training women alongside men despite her earlier promise to disband it. With a sequel in the works, the reference in ‘VisionQuest’ keeps Xialing’s version of the syndicate relevant.

This detail also ties into a broader narrative thread. Adamantium was introduced to the MCU in ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ where it was discovered on Celestial Island. Paladin has been using adamantium rounds to injure Vision in the series, and the connection to the Ten Rings suggests that this metal is already circulating within criminal networks.

The second reference is a nod to a creature feature. The Handler talks about bite marks from a creature that is part man, part wolf, and Paladin humorously remarks that it was a perfectly reasonable fellow by day. This is a clear reference to Jack Russell, the main character of ‘Werewolf by Night.’

This special debuted on Disney+ on Oct. 7, 2022, as Marvel Studios’ first Special Presentation. Directed by Michael Giacchino, it pays homage to classic Universal horror films, featuring Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a werewolf who retains his human intelligence, and Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone. A fully colored version was released on Oct. 20, 2023.

The timing of these references is perfect. With Halloween approaching, the mention coincides with the special’s resurgence, and the same scene also references the Punisher and Daredevil, making it one of the most packed dialogues in the MCU this year.

These references are effective due to Paladin’s character design. In the series, he is portrayed as ‘a Paladin’ rather than ‘the Paladin,’ representing the latest in a long line of hunters who work for the highest bidder. This lineage allows for a backstory that plausibly includes encounters with various corners of the Marvel universe.

This also aligns with the character’s comic book origins. Paladin first appeared in ‘Daredevil’ #150 in 1978 and has a history as a mercenary who frequently crosses paths with street-level heroes, making a backstory filled with encounters involving Daredevil, the Punisher, and supernatural elements quite fitting.

Whether any of these threads will pay off remains uncertain. The series has yet to reveal who hired Paladin, and Marvel has not confirmed if Jack Russell will return to the MCU. Nevertheless, this scene serves as a reminder that a bounty hunter with a rich history is a valuable tool for connecting an ever-expanding universe.

‘VisionQuest’ continues weekly on Disney+ with ‘Firewall’ and ‘Deadlock’ on Oct. 27, ‘Immolation’ on Nov. 3, and the finale, ‘Forever,’ on Nov. 10.
