‘The Lowdown‘ continues to complicate Lee Raybon’s life as he navigates personal and professional chaos. This season kicked off with Lee winning a Citizen Journalist of the Year award, only to have his estranged father, Lee Sr., unexpectedly return to town.

Amidst the family turmoil, Lee is assisting public defender Ginger, played by Betty Gilpin, in the search for a missing client named Mekko. The previous episode concluded with Lee fleeing through the woods after a former prison guard was murdered, leaving both him and the case in a precarious situation.

In the latest episode, titled ‘Truth’s Easy’, the story picks up right after those events, culminating in a shocking twist that places Lee and his stepfamily on a collision course with the law. The episode opens with Lee emerging from the woods and getting a ride from a friendly driver named Dale, portrayed by Steve Earle. Dale’s coffee mug, which reads “Truth’s Easy”, encapsulates a philosophy that becomes Lee’s guiding principle for the episode.

Back at his van, Lee finds a series of missed calls from Ginger, followed by a call informing him that his daughter Francis is at Sweet Emily’s with Frog. He first ensures her safety from her grandfather before meeting Ginger, where he reveals that Mekko must have escaped from prison. Ginger is skeptical about Mekko’s rapid disappearance, prompting them to visit Mekko’s uncle, Otis, played by Gary Farmer.

Otis shares that Mekko had shown up at his house the previous week in the dead of night, where he received food and clothing before vanishing again. Ginger senses something is amiss, leading her and Lee to a hospital where they encounter Mekko Jr. and his mother, Angie.

Ginger is taken aback to learn that Mekko has a son, which complicates her feelings given their close relationship. Angie reveals that Mekko seemed agitated, ready to confront someone after being left alone with a deceased child for hours. Although records show no recent deaths at the prison, a 19-year-old named Nathan Spence did die in a county jail, which Ginger dismisses as unrelated.

Lee confronts his father at the bookstore, where Frog expresses a desire to bond with his granddaughter. Lee remains wary, revealing that he once had his father committed, a history that clearly weighs on him.

Dinner at Samantha and Johnny’s home does not go smoothly either, as Francis is upset that Lee lied about her grandfather’s death. Johnny attempts to share a story about his own father missing a baseball game, but it pales in comparison to Lee’s experience. Overwhelmed, Lee steps away from the dinner table.

Outside, Lee notices a shadow in the yard and gives chase, only to find Lonnie, the man Ginger shot last week, now bandaged and armed. In the ensuing struggle, Lonnie gains the upper hand until Johnny intervenes, using his karate skills to choke Lonnie unconscious.

The episode takes a dramatic turn when Johnny discovers Lonnie is a deputy sheriff, causing panic over the implications of having attacked a cop. The episode concludes with Lee bewildered and sporting a chipped tooth.

The revelation that Lonnie is a deputy hints at deeper law enforcement involvement in Mekko’s disappearance and the events at the jail, suggesting that someone has been tailing both Ginger and Lee without their knowledge.

This twist also strikes a personal chord for Lee, who is most vulnerable at home. In an interview with TV Insider, Ethan Hawke remarked on the cliché of stepparents being threats to parents, making Johnny’s intervention feel even more significant, as the show has portrayed him as an ally rather than a rival.

Meanwhile, a subplot involving Marty hints at potential connections yet to be revealed. After faking a back injury at an archaeological dig assigned to him by Lee, Marty learns from a man named Ray about ties to wealthy buyers of illicit artifacts, referred to as the Oklahoma Illuminati. It wouldn’t be ‘The Lowdown’ without some shadowy power players lurking in the background.
