When ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘ concluded the team’s journey, it left Peter Quill on Earth with his grandfather, while the rest of the crew went their separate ways. The film’s final moments included a clear promise: “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return.”

This statement has lingered in the minds of Marvel fans for over three years. Star-Lord has made appearances in six films, starting from the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, before going silent. Each time Chris Pratt was asked about a potential return, he remained cautious and vague.

Now, Pratt has provided the most definitive answer yet, moving beyond mere teasing. In a conversation with The Playlist on The Bingeworthy podcast while promoting Season 2 of ‘The Terminal List’, he stated, “I have a great relationship with Kevin [Feige] and Lou [D’Esposito], and there have been both ongoing conversations about how we make good on that promise and also hard action taken to make sure that we make good on that promise.” He added, “You’ll see Star-Lord again, which is very exciting, but I’m not at liberty to say when that’s going to be, but he’s not going anywhere.”

The crucial detail lies in the term “hard action.” Pratt is not merely expressing a vague hope or general openness, which he has done in the past. He indicates that Marvel Studios has progressed beyond discussions, although he refrains from revealing what that action entails or when fans can expect it. Marvel Studios has chosen not to comment.

The timing of his remarks is significant, as they follow earlier comments about a pitch he made to Feige. Pratt mentioned having a strong vision for Star-Lord’s future and expressed a desire to help shape the next phase of Marvel storytelling. This latest interview suggests those discussions may have made progress.

The next major Marvel release is ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, set to hit theaters in December. Although Pratt has not been announced as part of the cast, he humorously noted earlier this year that his chair was missing from the film’s cast reveal. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have hinted that more stars will return.

Many fans speculate that ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which follows in December of next year, would be a more suitable fit for Star-Lord. One insider has also claimed that Star-Lord will feature in that film, although Marvel has yet to confirm it. Pratt’s comments do not point to a specific project, leaving open the possibility of a solo film or a return alongside a new Guardians lineup.

There’s also the question of who would helm a standalone story. Pratt has expressed a desire for James Gunn to direct a Star-Lord movie in an ideal scenario, but he acknowledged that this is unlikely now that Gunn leads DC Studios with Peter Safran. Gunn himself has discussed envisioning a story where Quill adjusts to life on Earth.

The promise in the credits was not a random choice of words. “The Legendary Star-Lord” is also the title of a short-lived 2015 comic series written by Sam Humphries, with art by Paco Medina, which followed Quill after he departed from the Guardians. This provides Marvel with ample source material if they wish to develop a narrative around this concept.

For now, fans have a solid confirmation but no specific date. It’s a frustrating mix, but it offers more clarity than Pratt has provided in the past.
