‘Scrubs’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap and Ending Explained: J.D. and Elliot Find Themselves Single Again
‘Scrubs‘ has always excelled at transforming everyday moments into emotional journeys, and the latest episode of the ABC revival exemplifies this perfectly. Titled “My Best Friend’s Birthday,” it aired on October 21 on ABC, with streaming available on Hulu the following morning.
The revival, which reintroduced J.D., Turk, and Elliot over 15 years after the original finale, continues to explore the changes in their lives during its second season. J.D. and Elliot are now divorced and co-parenting their son, yet their romantic lives remain complicated, with J.D. dating Rachel Bilson’s Charlie and Elliot rekindling her relationship with her former flame Sean, portrayed by Scott Foley.
This setup leads to significant developments in this episode. By the conclusion, both J.D. and Elliot find themselves single again after witnessing Charlie and Sean sharing a kiss in the hospital, a twist that also allows Sean to enjoy a satisfying victory over his long-time rival.
The episode begins with J.D. and Elliot struggling to balance their time with their partners. J.D.’s first day off in months is abruptly interrupted when he is called back to Sacred Heart, ruining a planned beach day with Charlie. Meanwhile, Elliot is busy treating a young patient who has swallowed a collection of state quarters, leaving Sean waiting.
To make amends, they invite Charlie and Sean to Turk’s birthday dinner. With Carla taking the kids out of town, Turk is free to celebrate with a lavish steak dinner alongside his two best friends. However, the hospital’s demands never allow anyone to relax, as the newbies page Turk about a coding patient, while J.D. and Elliot notice their waiter’s eye appearing to pop out of his head.

With the doctors pulled away, Charlie and Sean join them at Sacred Heart, where they share an expensive bottle of wine while watching ‘Frozen’ in the pediatric unit. Meanwhile, J.D. and Elliot are reminded of their effective teamwork and reflect on the challenges they faced right after their divorce. Elliot recalls bingeing on Pringles, while J.D. humorously admits he slept at the foot of Turk and Carla’s bed like a dog.
They conclude that they are both in a better place and are pleased to see each other moving on. J.D. even mentions that he can tell Sean genuinely loves her, leading to a heartfelt moment that sets up the punchline.

Just as they finish congratulating each other, they catch Charlie and Sean kissing, with Charlie straddling Sean. Turk arrives just in time to join his astonished friends and delivers a one-word reaction: “Damn!”
Later, at Lloyd’s Tavern, Charlie and Sean apologize for how the situation unfolded. The scene concludes with Sean getting the last laugh, dismissing J.D.’s claim that he is technically Elliot’s ex-ex-ex-boyfriend with a blunt “Nobody cares, J.D.!” Just like that, both leads are back on the market.
This twist not only disrupts their love lives but also nudges J.D. and Elliot closer together again. Their seamless teamwork at the hospital hints at a potential reconciliation in the future, a slow-burn tease that the series has employed for years.
It also gives Sean a gratifying turn of events. After years of J.D. coming between him and Elliot, Sean finally turns the tables with minimal effort. The episode does leave one historical detail unaddressed, as Sean previously dated the mother of J.D.’s son during the original series, a point the revival has chosen not to revisit.
This episode follows a storyline about J.D.’s workload. In the previous installment, he faced a tough decision regarding whether to report a mistake made by Turk that could cost the hospital, ultimately deciding to reduce his hours, learn to delegate, and see a therapist. This context clarifies why J.D. is so eager to spend time with Charlie in this episode.
With both J.D. and Elliot single, the show has ample opportunity for exploration. Fans will be eager to see if the duo leans into the reconciliation hinted at in this episode or if the series continues to keep them circling each other for a while longer. New episodes air Wednesdays on ABC at 8 p.m. ET, followed by a Hulu release the next morning.
