As autumn approaches, television programming often shifts towards darker folklore and atmospheric mysteries. The rich legacy of Eastern European mythology presents complex characters that are seldom portrayed with depth on modern screens. For many years, traditional tales have simplified these figures into mere monsters designed to scare children around late-night fires.

However, recent years have seen a creative transformation in prestige television, with a focus on dismantling ancient archetypes. Contemporary creators are increasingly exploring moral ambiguity, prompting audiences to reevaluate long-held beliefs about heroism, villainy, and female empowerment. This evolving interest paves the way for a narrative experiment that fuses brooding detective noir with age-old witchcraft.

Emerging in this space is ‘Yaga’, an ambitious dramatic horror series that reimagines the iconic myth of Slavic folklore within a captivating modern mystery. Adapted from creator Kat Sandler’s acclaimed 2019 stage production, the eight-episode series deconstructs traditional storytelling by weaving a compelling narrative where ancient secrets lie beneath contemporary challenges. As Sandler told Variety about the project’s feminist themes, “We don’t often get to watch women behaving badly in a way that we can enjoy and root for.”

The highly anticipated series officially premieres on Friday, October 23, 2026, with a two-episode launch. Following the premiere week, new episodes will be released weekly each Friday, culminating in a two-episode finale on November 27, 2026. This six-week rollout allows viewers plenty of time to piece together clues and speculate on the unfolding supernatural mystery.

Typically, streaming platforms release new titles in the early morning hours, and ‘Yaga’ follows this standard schedule. New episodes are set to drop at 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time, which is 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time for viewers on the West Coast. International audiences will experience the same release timing adjusted for their respective time zones.

Where to stream ‘Yaga’ varies by region, as the Canadian production has secured multiple distribution deals worldwide. In the United States, the eight-part series will stream exclusively on AMC+, adding to the platform’s growing collection of supernatural horror. Canadian viewers can catch ‘Yaga’ on Crave, which will also release the first two episodes on October 23, 2026.

In Australia, the series will be available for streaming on Foxtel and BINGE starting October 23, 2026. New Zealand viewers can find the series on Neon, while subscribers across mainland Europe can access episodes on HBO Max. British and Irish audiences will have to wait a bit longer, as Sky Atlantic and NOW will premiere the series on October 31, 2026.

Set against the misty backdrop of Whittock, British Columbia, ‘Yaga’ revolves around the disappearance of Henry Park, the heir to a commercial fishery. Noah Reid of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ stars as private investigator Rapp, an outsider with flashy habits determined to crack the case. Rapp partners with Carson, portrayed by ‘Letterkenny’ star Clark Backo, a local detective committed to safeguarding her community.

The investigation quickly intersects with Katherine, an enigmatic university professor played by ‘The Matrix’ star Carrie-Anne Moss, who has a fascination with young students and ancient Slavic rituals. Hudson Williams of ‘Heated Rivalry’ takes on a dual role, playing both the missing heir Henry and a mysterious lookalike named Logan Casey. As the detectives unravel conflicting threads, the seemingly tranquil Whittock transforms into a labyrinth of secrets steeped in ancient witchcraft.

Transitioning her stage play to television has provided the creative team with a broader canvas to layer intricate clues and atmospheric tension. “The fun thing about transitioning something from theater to film is you get to put so many more Easter eggs visually in it. You get to direct the eye with the camera to highlight lots of little tiny pieces and really build the mystery, build the sex, build the horniness by just being able to zero in on it a lot more, rather than just seeing one big picture of it,” Sandler noted in an interview with IGN.

With co-directors David Frazee and Rachel Talalay creating a visually moody atmosphere and an ominous score by Trevor Yuile, the series promises to deliver a captivating Halloween mystery. Supporting cast members such as Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, and Patrick Gilmore complete an ensemble where every character holds a secret. Blending folklore roots with sharp dialogue, ‘Yaga’ is set to be an unforgettable supernatural thriller.
