Disney Confirms No Current Plans for an ‘Encanto’ Sequel but Leaves Door Open
Few Disney animated films have made a lasting impact on pop culture like ‘Encanto’. Since its release in 2021, the tale of the Madrigal family has become a streaming sensation, a chart-topping soundtrack, and a beloved part of parks and merchandise, thanks in part to the hit song ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’.
The film grossed over $200 million at the box office and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. With music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and direction from Jared Bush and Byron Howard, it quickly became a cultural touchstone, prompting executives to consider it a franchise within a year of its debut.
This immense popularity has led to years of speculation about a sequel. Recently, Walt Disney Animation Studios creative executive Yvett Merino provided an update, stating in an interview with The Direct that there have been no discussions about moving forward with a second film, simply saying, “No, but I’m always here for it.”
Merino, who produced ‘Encanto’ as her first project, expressed her enthusiasm for exploring more stories within that universe while promoting Disney’s upcoming animated film ‘Hexed’. She indicated that she would be excited about any developments related to ‘Encanto’.
Thus, the situation is not a cancellation but rather a current status update: no sequel is in the works, and nothing has been officially confirmed.
These comments contrast with earlier suggestions. In 2023, Merino mentioned that Disney would explore various ways to keep the ‘Encanto’ world alive, including potential stories and park attractions, and she looked forward to its expansion within the company.
Over the years, others have hinted that a sequel could be on the horizon. Miranda has suggested that a follow-up is a matter of when, not if. John Leguizamo, who voiced Bruno, previously claimed that Disney was working on a second film, and Bush has expressed a desire to create more content. However, none of these statements have led to an official announcement.
The only confirmed project related to the film is a theme park attraction. Disney has announced an ‘Encanto’ attraction for Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida, set to open in 2027, which Merino pointed fans to when asked about future developments.
Meanwhile, Stephanie Beatriz, who voices Mirabel, has expressed her eagerness to collaborate with the creative team again, although they are currently engaged with other projects. Bush and Howard are busy working on ‘Zootopia 2’, which may explain the slow progress on a sequel.
The studio has a packed schedule with sequels already in the pipeline. Reports indicate that ‘Zootopia 2’, a third ‘Frozen’ movie, and new ‘Incredibles’ and ‘Coco’ sequels from Pixar are in the works, leaving little room for another ‘Encanto’ follow-up at this time.
Disney has been focusing heavily on sequels in recent years but is selective about which ones to greenlight. For ‘Encanto’, the absence of a clear story direction may also play a role, as the first film concluded the Madrigals’ main narrative, making it challenging to find a compelling angle for a sequel.

Nothing in the update rules out a sequel. Merino’s tone indicates a genuine affection for the property within the studio, and the film’s lasting popularity strengthens its case for a future project whenever the timing is right.
Previous comments from the creative team also reveal interest in other formats, including a potential Disney+ series focused on a family member. Bush has stated he would gladly support a show about any of the characters, and Charise Castro Smith mentioned that Miranda is interested in a series about Dolores.
For now, fans of ‘Encanto’ will need to exercise patience. The next opportunity to engage with the Madrigals will likely be at the park attraction in 2027, rather than in theaters or on Disney+.
While this may disappoint those eager for a swift announcement, it also keeps the door open. As Merino’s comments suggest, the interest is present, and all it would take is the right story at the right moment.
