‘A Minecraft Movie’ Becomes a Box Office Sensation: Jack Black and Jason Momoa Lead the Way
A Minecraft Movie has become a major box office success this year. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, this family-friendly film has earned over $409 million in the U.S. alone, making it the 44th highest-grossing movie in U.S. history.
It has surpassed popular films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jurassic Park, and Iron Man 3.
In its sixth weekend, the movie made about $8 million, which is only a 42% drop from the previous weekend, even though it was shown in 103 fewer theaters.
This steady performance shows that audiences are still excited to see it. With its current earnings, it’s expected to soon surpass Wonder Woman, which made $412 million, to become Warner Bros.’ fourth highest-grossing film in the U.S.
Worldwide, A Minecraft Movie has made approximately $876.9 million, making it the second-highest-grossing video game movie ever, just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The film had a record-breaking opening weekend, earning $163 million in North America. This was the biggest opening for a video game adaptation, beating the previous record held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The movie’s success is partly due to its popularity among younger audiences, especially Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Fans have turned screenings into lively events, dressing up and singing alongside the movie.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, audiences have responded positively. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore, and many viewers have praised the performances of Jack Black and Jason Momoa. There’s even a tribute to the late Minecraft YouTuber Technoblade, which fans have appreciated.
With a production budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie has been highly profitable. Its strong box office performance has provided a much-needed boost to Hollywood in 2025, especially after several underperforming releases earlier in the year.
A sequel is already in development, promising more adventures in the Minecraft universe.
