A New ‘Prison Break’ Is Coming But Will Not Feature Original Characters
Hulu is moving ahead with a reboot of Prison Break, but this new series will not continue the original narrative or bring back its main characters. Instead, it will exist within the same universe, focusing on a completely new storyline with a different cast and direction.
The original Prison Break premiered in the 2000s and quickly became one of the most beloved TV dramas of its era. The first season remains highly praised by fans and critics alike, often regarded as the strongest segment of the series. Initially intended as a one-season story, its success led to multiple follow-up seasons. However, many viewers felt the quality declined over time, particularly in the later seasons.
The new Hulu version is not aiming to remake the original plot. Iconic characters Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows will not be part of the reboot. While they may be referenced, the focus will be on new characters and a fresh setting.
In recent casting news, Kelli Berglund has taken on the role of Cheyenne, previously portrayed by Priscilla Delgado in the pilot episode. This change occurred after the pilot was filmed. Berglund is recognized for her performances in Animal Kingdom and Heels, and her involvement is seen as a significant addition to the project.
The reboot’s cast is already expanding. According to Collider, Emily Browning will portray Cassidy, while Drake Rodger joins as Tommy. Lukas Gage has been cast as Jackson, and Clayton Cardenas will play a character named Michael “Ghost.” JR Bourne is set to portray Junior, Georgie Flores will appear as Andrea, and Myles Bullock has been cast as Darius “Red.” Several guest stars are also attached, including Ray McKinnon, Margo Martindale, Donal Logue, Lili Taylor, and Lili Powell.

Elgin James is serving as the writer and showrunner for the new series. The project also includes several executive producers, such as Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz, all of whom were involved with the original Prison Break in various capacities.
The new narrative will center on a different type of lead character. It follows a soldier who becomes a corrections officer, taking a job at one of the most dangerous prisons in the country. Her motivations are deeply personal, and she is prepared to push herself to extreme limits to protect someone she cares about.
Filming for the reboot is expected to commence in June, although it remains unconfirmed whether production has already started. There is currently no official release date, but the series is being developed as one of Hulu’s major upcoming projects.
The aim of the reboot is to recapture some of the intensity and excitement that made the original Prison Break a hit, albeit with a completely new story and characters. For now, fans of the original series will have to wait and see how this new version unfolds as it progresses through production.
