Opening weekend chaos typically involves sold-out crowds, popcorn shortages, or overly enthusiastic fans quoting their favorite lines a bit too loudly. However, a recent screening in Colombia took a different turn, creating a story that quickly spread for all the wrong yet hilarious reasons.

Amid a record-breaking global box office run, one screening made headlines for reasons unrelated to box office figures or franchise lore. Sometimes, the most memorable movie moments occur off-screen.

A screening of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ at the Cine Colombia multiplex in the Plaza Bocagrande shopping center in Cartagena, Colombia, was evacuated on August 2 due to an overpowering, unidentified odor that permeated the auditorium roughly halfway through the film. Footage circulating online depicted numerous audience members covering their faces and rushing into the corridor, clearly eager to escape the smell.

The chaos erupted mid-movie, with hundreds of viewers abandoning their seats rather than endure the odor. Video shared by @ExxAlerts on X captured crowds streaming out of the theater, with the account labeling the incident a “horrific fart attack” that sent moviegoers fleeing.

Although theater staff never officially canceled the screening, the multiplex’s other auditoriums continued to operate normally during the disruption. Nevertheless, reports indicate that many moviegoers opted not to return to their seats even after the smell dissipated, effectively abandoning the film.

The identity of the individual responsible remains unknown. Speculation has circulated online regarding whether the incident was due to a genuine bodily mishap or a prank involving a stink bomb, though neither theory has been confirmed.

In an unexpectedly delightful twist, a person dressed in a full Spider-Man cosplay appeared in the hallway amid the evacuated crowd, reportedly helping to entertain and calm displaced moviegoers while the situation was resolved.

Social media users have since dubbed the mystery culprit “the film’s real villain,” with one commenter humorously stating, “That man is a menace,” while another remarked, “There’s no respect anymore, but I don’t think anyone is so rotten as to evacuate an entire auditorium.”

This bizarre incident coincides with ‘Brand New Day’ continuing its historic box office run, having already achieved the biggest opening weekend in film history with a global total exceeding $900 million. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, alongside new franchise additions including Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Liza Colón-Zayas.

Cinematic mishaps involving unruly audience behavior have become a frequent topic of discussion in recent months, following widely shared reports of theater staff growing frustrated with disruptive moviegoers at other high-profile releases. Regardless of the actual cause behind Cartagena’s smelly incident, it has already secured its place as one of the more unforgettable footnotes in this record-setting theatrical run.
