Marvel Studios May Be Rethinking the Future of ‘Champions’ and ‘Strange Academy’
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in a state of constant recalibration over the past few years, adjusting its strategy for Disney+ programming after several shows failed to create the same impact as its theatrical releases. Executives are now re-evaluating not only which stories to tell but also the formats in which they are presented to audiences.
This reassessment has affected nearly every aspect of Marvel’s upcoming slate, from team-up projects featuring younger heroes to entirely new areas of the MCU’s mythology. Fans have experienced a mix of excitement and skepticism as titles are teased, shelved, and revived, making it challenging to predict what’s next.
Recently, uncertainty has emerged around two of Marvel’s most anticipated projects. A new report suggests that Marvel Studios is considering transforming ‘Champions‘ and ‘Strange Academy‘ into movies instead of Disney+ series, marking a significant shift from previous plans.
This isn’t the first time these two properties have faced such a decision. Last year, Marvel Studios paused its plans for ‘Nova’ and ‘Strange Academy’ as TV shows, and earlier updates hinted that the studio was contemplating whether to keep them as streaming series or adapt them into films. This moment of indecision seems to be resurfacing, with ‘Champions’ now part of the discussion.
Earlier this year, it was believed that both projects were firmly set as television series. According to Daniel Richtman, the planned ‘Champions’ and ‘Strange Academy’ Disney+ shows were expected to occur after ‘Secret Wars’ and could run for multiple seasons. This framing suggested that both properties were seen as long-term streaming investments rather than standalone cinematic events, making the latest speculation about a movie format a notable reversal if it proves true.
‘Champions’ has had a complex development journey, initially conceived under a different name. The project began as a ‘Young Avengers’ concept before being rebranded, with reports suggesting that production could start in 2026 for a post-Secret Wars release. However, given Marvel’s goal to limit streaming projects to two per year, it likely wouldn’t debut until the latter half of 2027 or even 2028. This extended timeline may have influenced the studio’s decision to reconsider the format altogether. aol
Even Marvel’s leadership has been cautious about committing to specifics regarding the team-up project. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, when asked about plans for the Young Avengers, stated, “Potentially. In that case, it comes down to where’s the best story and where is the best strange alchemy. Who would be fun to see them with? Each other, because that’s what the Young Avengers are, but also mixing it up more,” during a press event earlier this year.
‘Strange Academy’ also has a rich history behind the scenes. Reports indicated that Marvel Studios was actively seeking a new writer to bring the magic-focused series to life after an earlier pause in development. Centered on a school for young sorcerers founded by Doctor Strange, this property has long been seen as a promising avenue for expanding the MCU’s mystical elements, regardless of whether it ultimately lands on the big screen or the small one.
What makes this potential shift particularly intriguing is the flexibility in format both projects seem to possess. Neither ‘Champions’ nor ‘Strange Academy’ has been rigidly defined in its storytelling ambitions, allowing Marvel to adapt as it continues to reassess its strategy post-‘Secret Wars’. Given the studio’s documented challenges in translating ensemble hero teams into successful streaming series, a theatrical approach could provide a clearer path to establishing these characters with broader audiences.
For now, nothing has been officially confirmed, and Marvel remains tight-lipped about specifics for either project. However, the possibility that these two team-driven stories could be restructured as films indicates that the studio is still actively shaping what its next generation of heroes will look like on screen.
