Eli Roth Discusses Generative AI Use in His New Horror Film ‘Ice Cream Man’
Eli Roth has addressed the ongoing conversation about the use of generative AI in his upcoming horror film Ice Cream Man, clarifying that the technology was utilized in only a limited capacity within the movie.
This clarification followed fans noticing that AI visual effects company Dark Half was credited in early review copies of the film. This led to inquiries regarding the extent to which generative AI influenced the film and whether some of its more unique visuals were crafted using this technology.
The discussion intensified after Roth previously described one of the film’s standout sequences during an interview with Polygon. This particular scene features a bizarre animated short that appears on children’s phones, prompting them to commit violent acts. Roth mentioned that the sequence drew inspiration from classic early animation and that he personally sketched the designs. “I have an animation background and I drew it,” Roth shared with Polygon.
He elaborated on his collaboration with an animation team to replicate the aesthetic of vintage cartoons, particularly the distinctive and unconventional style of early animation. Roth aimed for the sequence to evoke the feel of classic 1920s cartoons, characterized by a handmade look and a slightly eerie vibe.
“I sat there and I drew out the frames that I wanted, and I tried to match the style of the 1920s haunted Mickey Mouse cartoons,” Roth explained.
However, after Polygon inquired about the film’s AI usage, Roth provided a follow-up statement to clarify his earlier remarks. The director acknowledged that his previous explanation did not fully convey how the technology was integrated into the production.
“I misspoke. AI was used in a very small portion of a few scenes in the film,” Roth stated in a message shared with Polygon.

Roth emphasized that the application of AI was not a central aspect of the film’s development but rather a tool to help realize specific creative concepts.
“It was an opportunity where technology and creativity came together to help bring my vision for the film to life,” he remarked.
The director did not disclose which scenes incorporated generative AI or the specific effects created with the technology. He also refrained from detailing Dark Half’s role in the production, other than confirming that AI was involved in limited areas of the film.
The dialogue surrounding Ice Cream Man arises amid a broader industry debate on the role of generative AI in filmmaking. While some filmmakers view AI as a valuable creative tool for achieving certain visual elements, others express concerns about its potential impact on traditional artists and production jobs.
For Roth, the use of AI seems to have been aimed at enhancing his creative vision rather than replacing conventional filmmaking methods. The director has previously articulated his desire for complete control over Ice Cream Man, including its independent production and release strategy.
With the film already generating buzz for its extreme horror themes and distinctive style, the discussion surrounding its AI usage adds another intriguing layer. Roth’s comments indicate that while generative AI played a role in the film, it was merely a minor aspect of the overall production.
