For years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has hinted at its mutant era without delivering it. Fans have speculated for nearly a decade about when and how the X-Men would finally transition from Fox’s previous franchise into Kevin Feige’s expansive superhero universe.

That anticipation officially came to an end this month. Marvel Studios revealed the full cast of its upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot during Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, confirming a lineup that has been the subject of casting rumors for months.

The most surprising announcement of the night came from Adam Driver, who appeared in a prerecorded video message to share that he will portray the franchise’s villain, Mister Sinister. Driver joins an ensemble cast that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Inde Navarrette as Rogue.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made the announcement onstage alongside director Jake Schreier during Disney’s Entertainment Showcase panel on August 14. The film now has an official release date of May 5, 2028, providing fans with a concrete timeline for the mutant team’s live-action MCU debut.

Driver’s introduction included a touch of theatrical misdirection before landing on the actual reveal. In the video, Marvel shared that Driver initially thought being told to “show up for X-Men” meant going to a set in California, only to find himself alone on a soundstage at Pinewood Studios.

He mentioned that he and Feige had “been talking for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” adding that they had “finally found the perfect film at the perfect time.” Driver then humorously began to reveal his role, starting to say “Magneto” before pivoting to announce his actual character: Nathaniel Milbury.

This name holds significant weight for longtime comic readers. Milbury is one of several aliases used by Mister Sinister, whose true identity in Marvel Comics is the Victorian-era geneticist Nathaniel Essex. The character has long been obsessed with mutant genetics and evolution, often manipulating other mutants, including members of the X-Men, for his own experiments.

Sink’s casting as Jean Grey wasn’t entirely new information, as she had already debuted in the role earlier this year as a mysterious antagonist in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Feige has previously hinted that the upcoming ‘X-Men’ film will focus heavily on Jean Grey’s story, which could suggest a significant role for Driver’s Mister Sinister given the character’s deep comic book ties to Jean’s origins and the Phoenix mythology.

Connor, known for his work on ‘Heartstopper,’ will portray Cyclops, while Abbott, fresh off his role in ‘The Testament of Ann Lee,’ will play a young Professor X. Navarrette, who gained recognition in the film ‘Obsession,’ rounds out the cast as Rogue, alongside newcomer Maya Boyd as Storm.

Notably, Feige has indicated that the casting process isn’t complete, meaning more mutant reveals could still be on the horizon before the film hits theaters. It remains unclear whether Mister Sinister will serve as the film’s primary antagonist or simply one piece of a larger villainous puzzle.

Driver’s name has circulated in connection with the MCU for years without ever quite landing. He was previously rumored for roles in Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot, including both Doctor Doom and Reed Richards, though those discussions reportedly never progressed far enough to result in an offer.

Now, with Mister Sinister officially confirmed as his entry into the franchise, Driver becomes the latest high-profile dramatic actor to transition into the superhero genre following his work in ‘Star Wars’ and Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis.’ It’s also significant that this film marks the live-action debut of Mister Sinister, a character who has never appeared on screen in any previous ‘X-Men’ film series.

Schreier, who previously directed the well-received ‘Thunderbolts’ in 2025, will helm the project, providing Marvel with another filmmaker known for balancing large ensembles. With the team now assembled and a release date set, fans have roughly two years to speculate about how this new ‘X-Men’ story will redefine the mutants’ place in the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.
