Pro-Israel Group Calls for Boycott of Mark Ruffalo Over Ellison Family Comments
The ongoing debate in Hollywood regarding the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger has seen Mark Ruffalo emerge as a prominent critic. The Oscar-nominated actor has been vocal in his opposition to the deal, arguing that it poses a threat to numerous industry jobs and undermines editorial independence at networks like CNN and HBO.
Recently, this criticism intensified, leading to formal backlash from an advocacy group within the entertainment sector. What began as a critique of a corporate merger has evolved into a larger discussion about language, intent, and the fine line between political critique and antisemitism.
Creative Community for Peace, a pro-Israel advocacy organization based in Hollywood, is now calling for a boycott of Ruffalo until he issues an apology for remarks they label as antisemitic. This demand followed an Instagram post from Ruffalo, where he linked Larry and David Ellison’s connections to Oracle with what he termed Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza, suggesting that the merger warranted scrutiny due to this association.
Ari Ingel, Executive Director of CCFP, was direct in his response to Ruffalo’s post. “Mark Ruffalo’s rhetoric has increasingly crossed the line from criticism of Israel into extremist and antisemitic messaging,” Ingel stated on Saturday, emphasizing that Ruffalo’s arguments against the merger increasingly intertwine hostility toward Israel with references to Jewish-associated wealth and media ownership.
Ingel also highlighted Ruffalo’s long history of comments regarding Israel, noting that the actor has supported boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaigns against the country for nearly ten years. He pointed to 2021 when Ruffalo accused Israel of committing genocide, a claim he later retracted, calling it inaccurate and inflammatory.
Ruffalo quickly responded to the mounting criticism, which also included remarks from Paramount following his initial comments. “The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest,” Ruffalo wrote on X Saturday morning, firmly rejecting the characterization of his statements.
He clarified that there is a distinction between criticizing Israeli government policies and harboring hostility toward Jewish individuals, arguing that scrutiny of military technology contracts and executive leadership should not be misconstrued as anti-Jewish sentiment. Ruffalo asserted that his objections are rooted in his political beliefs and should not be seen as hostility toward Jewish people, whom he expressed deep love and respect for.
Ruffalo also defended his opposition to the merger, stating that it has significant implications for the country and the livelihoods of thousands of workers associated with Warner Bros. Discovery’s properties. He maintained that the examination of Oracle’s business, which involves data collection, surveillance technology, and government contracts, is separate from any commentary regarding the Ellison family’s faith or heritage.

This is not the first instance of controversy surrounding Ruffalo’s comments on Israel. In 2020, he characterized the relationship between Israel and Palestinians as a form of apartheid, and during the 2021 conflict, he called for sanctions against Israel before later apologizing for using the term genocide.
Last year, he escalated his stance by joining Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, Javier Bardem, and other actors in a pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions deemed complicit in genocide and apartheid, an initiative that targeted institutions rather than individual filmmakers. Paramount publicly opposed that boycott, adding another layer to the studio’s ongoing tension with the actor.
Paramount has stated that it does not plan to blacklist creators who oppose the merger, emphasizing its commitment to open dialogue regardless of individual positions on the deal. However, the conflict between Ruffalo and both Paramount and CCFP shows no signs of resolution, with both sides entrenched in their positions as discussions about the merger continue to unfold publicly.
