‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 Achieves Record-Breaking Production Costs for Disney
Disney seems to be adopting a more cautious strategy with the second season of ‘Ahsoka’ following the significant spending issues tied to ‘The Acolyte.’
Recent U.K. financial filings reveal that pre-production expenses for ‘Ahsoka’ season two were notably lower than the initial costs associated with ‘The Acolyte.’ Reports indicate that the production team for ‘Ahsoka’ season two spent approximately $33.7 million before filming commenced, while ‘The Acolyte’ incurred around $42.4 million during the same pre-production phase.
The gap widened further when tax reimbursements from the U.K. government were factored in. ‘Ahsoka’ season two reportedly received about $5.4 million back through the country’s film incentive program, reducing its pre-production costs to around $28.3 million. In contrast, ‘The Acolyte’ ended up with an equivalent figure of approximately $35.9 million.
This information stems from financial documents related to the U.K.-based production companies established for each series. Disney frequently utilizes separate entities for filming major productions in Britain to take advantage of reimbursement opportunities for part of their expenditures.
‘The Acolyte’ was filmed in the U.K. through a company named Blue Stockings (UK). While it became one of the most discussed Star Wars projects in recent times, the attention was not always favorable.

Even before its debut on Disney+, ‘Ahsoka’ faced online criticism. Some viewers labeled the series as “woke” due to its female-led and diverse cast. Following the premiere in 2024, audience reactions on Rotten Tomatoes quickly declined, resulting in a low audience score, despite a more favorable critical reception.
A significant concern for Disney was the viewership numbers. According to Nielsen ratings cited in reports, ‘The Acolyte’ struggled to maintain audience interest after its initial weeks, eventually vanishing from streaming charts, leading Lucasfilm to cancel plans for a second season.
The final reported budget for ‘The Acolyte’ soared to over $230 million due to rising production costs during filming. Disney now seems committed to avoiding a similar fate with ‘Ahsoka’ season two.
Unlike ‘The Acolyte,’ ‘Ahsoka’ already boasted a strong fanbase prior to its live-action adaptation. The character made her debut in ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ and has since become one of the most beloved figures in contemporary Star Wars lore.
The live-action series stars Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, with Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker and David Tennant voicing the droid Huyang.
The first season of ‘Ahsoka’ fared significantly better with audiences compared to ‘The Acolyte.’ Disney reported that the premiere attracted 14 million views within the first five days on Disney+. Nielsen also reported strong streaming figures during its debut week.
Season two is currently being filmed in the U.K. through another Disney entity called Robot Dog Pictures (UK), which is believed to be named after Huyang, Ahsoka’s loyal droid companion.
Dave Filoni, who wrote every episode of the first season, is once again at the helm of the series. Reports indicate that Bryce Dallas Howard will direct two episodes, having previously worked on other Star Wars projects.
Filming for the new season concluded in late 2025, but fans will have to wait longer than anticipated. Disney recently postponed the release of ‘Ahsoka’ season two until early 2027.
For Lucasfilm, this delay might provide additional time to ensure the series meets both creative and financial expectations following the costly challenges associated with ‘The Acolyte.’
