Aimee Garcia Discusses Renata’s Shocking Death in ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’
‘The Walking Dead: Dead City‘ has been quietly crafting a rare narrative for this franchise in its third season, showcasing a hopeful community emerging from the ruins of Manhattan. This sense of optimism sets the show apart from its predecessors, even as the specter of death looms large in this world.
That tension reached a breaking point in the penultimate episode, delivering one of the season’s most unexpected losses. Aimee Garcia’s Renata has been a pivotal character since the very first episode, guiding Maggie’s vision for the community while also pursuing Negan for his past misdeeds.
In her final moments, Renata attempted to reason with Negan rather than resorting to violence, expressing her desire for him to mature instead of wanting to kill him. However, bar owner Dillard, Negan’s unstable former friend, was not willing to accept that outcome, leading to a tragic confrontation where he shot Renata in the chest, claiming she wasn’t in charge and could have prevented the chaos.
Garcia has now opened up about Renata’s death, providing insight into what she believes motivated Dillard’s actions that night. She suggested that Dillard never intended to kill Renata, viewing it instead as an unfortunate chain reaction triggered by the deaths of his two closest companions, a pair of walkers he had grown emotionally attached to.
Garcia likened Dillard’s bond with those walkers to Tom Hanks’ relationship with the volleyball in ‘Cast Away,’ telling TV Insider that Dillard had effectively transformed the creatures into his version of friends. The loss of those companions, in her interpretation, drove him to the violence that ultimately resulted in Renata’s tragic fate.

The actress also reflected on Renata’s emotional state leading up to her death, particularly a moment where her character stomps on a walker outside the bar in a clear display of frustration and anger. Garcia attributed that outburst to the accumulation of unresolved trauma, specifically referencing Renata’s inability to process witnessing the Croat kill her uncle earlier in the season.
This unresolved grief adds complexity to Renata’s final encounter with Dillard, indicating that her death was not merely a result of being caught in Dillard’s downward spiral, but also a consequence of the trauma she never had the opportunity to confront. This detail recontextualizes some of her more volatile decisions throughout the latter half of the season.
Despite her character’s sudden exit, Garcia expressed satisfaction with how the storyline unfolded. She has spoken highly of working alongside Jimmi Simpson, praising his acting range and predicting he will win an Oscar someday, calling him a true chameleon in the role of Dillard.
Renata’s death significantly reduces Maggie and Negan’s allies as they head into the season finale, while also placing Dillard in control of a community he has been systematically dismantling from within. With Dillard now donning his old police uniform and holding hostages, the show has fully embraced a villainous turn that Garcia’s insights suggest is rooted more in grief and attachment than sheer malice.
As the story unfolds, Renata’s arc concludes as one of the season’s most pivotal narratives, influencing both the immediate challenges facing Maggie and Negan and the emotional stakes leading into the finale. Garcia’s perspective adds significant depth to a death that could have easily been perceived as mere shock value.
