Alexander Skarsgård’s Intense Training Routine at 50 for ‘The Northman’ Revealed
Few actors have generated as much discussion around physical transformation as Alexander Skarsgård, whose changing physique has become nearly as significant as his acting career. From his early days on ‘True Blood’ to his more recent leading roles, the Swedish star has consistently reshaped his body to meet the demands of each character.
His reputation soared with ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ in 2016, where Skarsgård dedicated eight months to a rigorous two-phase training program. This involved a three-month bulking phase followed by a five-month shredding phase, aimed at achieving a lean, agile look suitable for his jungle role. This pattern of complete physical reinvention for major roles has become a hallmark of his career.
Now, as Skarsgård nears 50, insights into his current training regimen have emerged, and they are just as demanding as those that established his reputation. For ‘The Northman’ in 2022, he teamed up again with celebrity trainer Magnus Lygdbäck, who had previously guided his transformation for Tarzan. This time, the goal was to develop a bulkier, more powerful “Viking warrior” physique.
This shift required Skarsgård to gain approximately 20 pounds of muscle over eight months, training five days a week, with a potential sixth session reserved for active recovery or mobility work. Each of those five sessions combined high-intensity interval training with traditional weightlifting, focusing on bodybuilding fundamentals in the 6-to-12 rep range across at least four dedicated weight-training days.
The program extended beyond weights. Skarsgård also incorporated yoga, ten-minute sprint sessions, and challenging obstacle-course circuits featuring bear crawls, frog jumps, chin-ups, and hand-walking drills, all designed to enhance functional strength rather than just aesthetic muscle. Core work was integrated every other day, alternating between static holds like planks and mountain climbers, and rotational movements such as cable wood chops and Russian twists.
Nutrition was equally vital in his transformation. Skarsgård’s diet focused on protein intake at about one gram per pound of bodyweight, aiming for a calorie surplus just above maintenance to build muscle without excess fat. This approach reportedly included late-night protein and potato snacks to aid recovery during intense training periods.
Preparation for ‘The Northman’ continued even amid disruptions caused by COVID-19, which delayed production and required Skarsgård to maintain his routine for stretches without his trainer present. This level of consistency has become a defining characteristic for the actor across various transformations, showcasing his disciplined approach to physical preparation over the years.
What makes Skarsgård’s current physique particularly remarkable is the age factor. Maintaining this level of muscle mass and definition as he approaches 50 places him among actors who defy typical expectations regarding fitness and aging in Hollywood. It demonstrates that foundational training principles, heavy compound lifts, disciplined nutrition, and consistent recovery remain effective regardless of age.
For fans who have followed Skarsgård’s physical evolution through roles like Tarzan and Amleth, this latest glimpse into his training routine illustrates the significant effort required to maintain such a physique well into his fifth decade.
