Alice Osman Teases ‘Heartstopper’ Volume 6 and Finale Movie

Recently, we’ve received confirmation that the popular Heartstopper series would be ending with a movie rather than a new season, which drew mostly positive reactions, although some were disappointed that Netflix did not want to commit to another full season of the show.

On top of that, the graphic novel series is ending with volume six, which will bring Nick and Charlie’s story to a proper end.

In light of that, author Alice Osman recently talked to the press about these two upcoming finales, and she teased some interesting things, although she managed to keep it spoiler-free!

For starters, she confirmed her excitement with Netflix agreeing to giving the series a proper send-off. “It’s a huge sigh of relief! We’ve been working towards and hoping for this moment since we wrapped production of Season 3 at the end of 2023,” she said. “There has been a huge amount of dedication and determination behind the scenes to get to this point. I’ve seen how frustrated and worried fans have been about whether we’d get to tell the end of the story — I’ve had messages asking about it every single day since Season 3 dropped! So I’m incredibly relieved that the answer is YES.”

As for the point of the movie, Osman said that the movie will have two basic points. “On a basic level, of course, I want the movie to be a beautiful and emotional send-off for the Heartstopper story,” she said, before adding, “On a slightly deeper level, I think this movie will explore what makes love survive, or what elevates it, or deepens it.”

She confirmed that the script is nearly done and that the movie will start filming this summer, with the positive reactions giving her more energy to continue. As for the graphic novel, which is also ending with the upcoming volume six, Osman also revealed some details.

“I spent the first few months of 2024 writing the story and dialogue for Heartstopper Volume 6, and I’ve been drawing the pages since last June. I’m currently just over halfway through drawing the book. I hope to finish drawing it by the end of the year … though I’m not sure if I’ll be successful,” she said. “But I’ll try my best. When I started planning this final book, I told myself I was allowed to include anything and everything I’d always wanted to explore with these characters. I’m proud to say that’s what I’ve been doing.”

What is the story going to be about? Osman teased that “among many things, it explores Charlie finding a new sense of confidence and independence, and healing from some of his old demons. Meanwhile, Nick has a bit of a crisis about his future, influenced by memories of his past.”
