‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel Reportedly Shelved Due to Behind-The-Scenes Issues
Few horror revivals made an impact like ‘Alien: Romulus’ did in 2024. Fede Álvarez’s return-to-form approach to the franchise felt like a true course correction, demonstrating that the Xenomorph still had vitality decades after Ridley Scott’s original redefined sci-fi horror.
This success made a sequel seem not just hopeful but inevitable. Cailee Spaeny’s portrayal of Rain drew comparisons to a contemporary Ripley, and both she and co-star David Jonsson were anticipated to reprise their roles in a follow-up that Álvarez had already started developing.
However, that certainty has now crumbled. A recent report from World of Reel indicates that the ‘Romulus’ sequel has been indefinitely shelved and may never materialize, with sources claiming that Álvarez’s departure has thrown the entire project into disarray, leaving no clear path forward.
The unraveling reportedly stems from a creative disagreement between Álvarez and Ridley Scott, who remains a producer on the franchise. Álvarez had intended to bring back Michael Fassbender’s android character David for the sequel, with the actor nearly signed on and a final script draft completed, only for Scott to allegedly refuse to allow the character’s appearance in another director’s film.
This standoff is said to have derailed all subsequent plans. Rumors suggested that Scott wanted to retain David for his own potential future projects within the ‘Alien’ universe, and once that option closed, Álvarez exited the project entirely in September of last year, although he was expected to remain as a producer.

The search for a new director has also faced challenges. 20th Century Studios reportedly reached out to Michael Sarnoski, the director of ‘Pig’ and ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ but those discussions fell through, and recent reports suggest that even that potential hire has cooled amid ongoing creative interference from Scott.
Additional signs indicate the project’s uncertain future beyond the director search. 20th Century Studios has reportedly shifted its focus to a separate, standalone ‘Alien’ film being penned by Brian Duffield, which is unrelated to the ‘Romulus’ storyline, hinting that the studio may be moving on from Rain and Andy’s narrative.
The cast’s own career trajectories add another layer of uncertainty. David Jonsson has been cast as the new Black Panther in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther 3,’ while Cailee Spaeny is reportedly in talks for the role of Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ film, meaning both leads of ‘Romulus’ now have significant franchise commitments elsewhere, even if the sequel were to be revived.
For a franchise that appeared to have regained its footing, the quiet dissolution of its most promising follow-up in years is a disappointing turn of events. Whether 20th Century Studios can find a way to resolve the creative gridlock or simply allow the sequel to fade away remains uncertain.
