The realm of Eternia has officially made its way into our world, and the cast of ‘Masters of the Universe’ has been actively celebrating this moment. A fan experience event in Los Angeles offered attendees a glimpse into the film’s immersive mythology, with stars Alison Brie and Camila Mendes prominently featured in a striking installation showcasing Skeletor’s iconic throne of skulls.

Directed by Travis Knight and produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films, with Sony Pictures Releasing managing international distribution, the film premiered in theaters on June 5. It stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and He-Man, alongside Jared Leto as Skeletor, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, and Alison Brie as the villainous Evil-Lyn.

Events like the one in Los Angeles have become essential in bridging the gap between the franchise’s devoted nostalgic audience and newer viewers.

The promotional campaign has been a spectacle in its own right. On May 19 and 20, around 1,600 drones illuminated the night sky over Los Angeles, creating dynamic images related to the film, including Castle Grayskull, He-Man, Skeletor’s skull-like visage, and the iconic “I Have the Power” phrase. Videos of this event quickly circulated across Instagram, TikTok, and X, highlighting the stakes tied to this release.

The property has transitioned through various studios, including Netflix, Warner Bros., and Sony Pictures, along with numerous writers, directors, and actors like Jon M. Chu, McG, and Noah Centineo. Following Amazon MGM’s acquisition of the rights in 2024, they appointed Travis Knight as director and Nicholas Galitzine as the lead hero. The film’s journey has been ongoing since 2007, making its theatrical debut feel genuinely historic for fans.

The screenplay was crafted by Chris Butler and Aaron and Adam Nee, based on a story by Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, Alex Litvak, and Michael Finch, with a production budget estimated between $170 and $200 million. Everything about the production exuded blockbuster ambition.

Despite the grand spectacle, the opening weekend yielded a sobering outcome. ‘Masters of the Universe’ finished its opening weekend with a global total of $54.3 million, including $29.3 million from the domestic box office. Given the production budget, these figures raised immediate concerns.

Only 5% of viewers were under 12 years old, and just 6% were between 13 and 17. The largest demographic for the opening weekend was those aged 45 to 54, making up 29%, indicating a film that resonated primarily with the generation that grew up with these characters. While winning back nostalgic adults is one challenge, attracting a new generation of fans has proven to be significantly more difficult.

However, the audiences who did attend were enthusiastic. The film received a B CinemaScore and a 64% definite recommend rating among general viewers, with children under 12 rating it at 96% in the top two categories.

Critical reception has been mixed. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes praised the film’s self-aware script and spirited cast, calling it a delightful adventure that captures the humanity of He-Man. Others described it as a glossy action spectacle that wears its heart on its muscular sleeve. The audience score stood at an impressive 87%, indicating a notable divide between critical skepticism and fan affection.

Nicholas Galitzine discussed the physical challenges of his role in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in April, stating, “Truthfully, I feel like I learned a lot about myself and how far I was willing to push myself and really suffering for it. It took a really, really long time. It’s really not for the faint of heart.”

The images from the Los Angeles fan experience embody the kind of excitement that Mattel and Amazon MGM have been striving to generate around the franchise. Whether the film can recover from its disappointing opening with strong streaming performance on Amazon Prime remains uncertain, but Brie and Mendes posing in front of Skeletor’s throne indicates that the cast is enjoying the journey.
